MG TD TF 1500 - Clutch rod repair clamp
Allthough many TD owners applied the Mike O-conner clutch linkage fix, every now and than it still happens: a broken clutchrod. Replacing the rod involves fiddling around in the pedalbox which is not every ones joy. Doing so at the roadside on a rainy day certainly is nobodies joy. Discussing the issue with some MG friends, we suggested to design a kind of clamp to do an emergency repair. After a night sleep, I made this one ![]() |

Huib, Genius! I haven't been there yet, but this would certainly do the trick. Gene |

Huib, I'm curious about the location of this breakage that you're talking about. I've never seen it happen. I've seen a rod bend at the beginning of the threaded section. Any chance that you can get an image of a broken one? Bud |

Day one of my TD ownership (after 60 years of anxiously waiting and wanting) I took it out and after about three miles the clutch pedal fell to the floor. I have experience driving sans the ability to disengage the clutch but was hesitant in an unfamiliar TD. A walk back up the road resulted in finding the nut that had come off the clutch rod and a bit of squirming under the front end got the rod reattached for the drive home. I bought a new rod and nuts from M and haven't had that fiasco since but the M replacement rod seems to be just a welded together jury rig. Nonetheless, I've put a couple of thousand miles on the TD and the rod hasn't broken. I do carry a couple of spare nuts in case the fiasco recurs. Jud |

Bud, I have wittnessed two on the road clutchrod breaks and they broke right at the junction of threaded end and rod. I do not have a picture. My fellow clubmembers state that this is the location of the breakage. huib |

Huib, the problem that I have is in trying to see how your clamp will not interfere with the threads. Bud |

Bud, the clamp is a hollow tube. The tube end of the broken clutchrod goes in halveway and the threaded end will slip in at the other side as far as possible so that both end of the breakage touch each other. So, both broken ends will be at the same position as before the snap-off. Fastening all bolts will now create a strong connection between the two ends. Hope this helps, huib |

Got it, Huib. Thank you. I had pictured the break being at the beginning of the threads. Bud |
