MG TD TF 1500 - color of hood frame for TD 1951
Hi I am uncertain with the correct color of the hood frame for my MG TD/C May 1951 your Info on this page says light tan. also Moss sells them with this paint. My old hood frame looks like never painted and has a silvery green hammer effect enamel has anybody more info about this? michael

Hi Christipher I know, what stands in the list above. but as I told, my hoodframe is guaranteed not painted the last 35 jears ( so long it is mine) and it was never painted in tan but in silvery green hammer effect enamel. has someone elso more info?

Hi Michael I do not claim to be a expert ... Here is what I have observed doing some quick research on your question. Every picture of the frame shown in The Orginal MG T Series by Anders Clausager shows a light tan except one. That is a older model TA ? With a black top and that has a black frame. In that area he explains that they transitioned from black to tan at some point on that model. Hope that helps. Joe

I made a typo. That should be TC NOT TA above.

The silvery green paint you describe is probably the work of a previous owner however I discovered from this site that there were cars built in Germany that differed from those TD's from Abingdon. Perhaps you have a German built car? I think Chris may have more info on the German TD's but I don't recall whether this detail has ever been discussed. I painted my frame tan to match the Moss fabric. The original TD frames were covered with a duck canvas & it has been suggested that the frames matched, or attempted to match the colour of the duck. The TF frame was a different colour, more pink, perhaps because the "rag top" colour changed as Abingdon went searching for a better performing material. Clausager's book is interesting but as many of the pics are of restored cars there are a considerable number of errors. Hope this helps. Cheers Peter TD 5801

Ok Folks I gave it up and put it to the sandblaster for painting tan ( and this fits better to my new tan hood.) but for history here is a pic from the old paint. this was everywhere, even under the old front wood. also I remember, that my sideframes had this colour

Just another info my car is TD/C 7740 EXR from may 1951. I dont know where it was sold first. The only previous owner I know was switzerland 1966. I dont know, where outside GBR EXR were sold, but for sure not in Germany thanks for your assistance michael

The factory material often lasted only a few years. I have seen ads for three year old TF's which mentioned a "new hood". Could be that your frame was stripped and repainted by a proud owner in the 1950's when the fabric was replaced. Matthew.
