MG TD TF 1500 - connecting Rods
Good Day everyone. I have a spare engine that came with my TD. As I was rebuilding the car, I used a few parts off it and now have decided to build the engine up as a spare, or to possibly sell in the future. The pistons and rods that came with the engine were unusable, as they were stored in a plastic tub that got water in it. I have purchased used rods from ebay, along with a set of +40 pistons. I removed the pistons from the rods today to begin cleaning, and I noticed that the holes on the small ends of the rods, on two of them were not concentric with the tops of the rods. Is this normal? Are all four rods the same part number? Looks like at least three are. I'd say what you see would be called normal. Compare them and you'll find the hole centers (pin to rod journal) are the same, or close enough for an MG. Some of us discovered rods with different part numbers. Photo shows a shiny set just shotpeened, three MOWOG 24005*18 and one MOWOG% 24005*19. Close enough.

Never, ever be tempted to open out the hole in the little end with a screwdriver or similar tool. If the gudgeon pin is tight wind it out with a piece of screwed rod and spacers. I had the rods and crank from my 1932 MG M Type crack tested. All the rods showed stress fractures at the oposite side of the little end pinch bolts. These had been caused by someone in the past leavering open the little ends. The bottom line was several thousa and pounds for a Phoenix crank and rods. The new rods had bushed little ends rather than pinch bolts. Jan T |

Jan, I did what you opted for when I rebuilt my TF-1500: New billet crank, fully floating gudgeon pin Sanez H-pattern rods (no pinch bolt), and new forged pistons to match. I feel much better about driving the motor than with the pinch bolt set up. New xpeg blocks are pretty hard to come by. Alex |

When I built my motor, I went with modern steel rods by Crower in CA. also Venolia pistons and the modern crank. I too feel much better than I did with the old stuff in there. |

Joe, No problem. Since they're used, they probably have tens of thousand of miles proving they'll work. JIM |

No problem at all - I just checked a dozen rods and 5 of them are eye-ball off-center, including a set of NOS rods. Tom Lange MGT Repair |
