MG TD TF 1500 - Cool Bonnet Prop in Wood

OK, you old hands at MG TD's have probably seen these before, but it's new to me, and I thought very ingeniously designed. It's a bonnet prop for sale by some guy on eBay, but since he's included photos of the item with a tape measure it makes it pretty dang easy to just make my own out of some scrap mahogany. It's now on my "when I have time" list!

Yea, I made one of those but I still like LaVerne's better. Wish he would make up some for sale! There's a bunch more T-talk in case you didn't see them yet.

Not my original design (probably a knock-off of LaVerne's) but simple to make, simple to use and simple to store in the tool box. Jud

Just FYI, instead of all these fancy bonnet props, you can just place a pillow, motor robe, sweater, etc on the closed panel and fold one over onto the other. All you need to do is prevent the bonnet corners from contacting the center hinge strip. In other words, don't let it open more than 90% of the way. There is no reason why the bonnet has to stick straight up. There is MUCH better access if you fold it all the way over, and then you don't have to worry about it getting bumped or blown closed and severely damaging your paint.

Alternately, a small strap run from the tool box latch to the bonnet latch will hold it open past vertical, making access better and with little to no chance of the aforementioned accidents. I carry one in my car and it works much faster, easier and more securely than any bonnet prop I've seen.

You're absolutely right, Steve. But there are circumstances where having both sides open at the same time is a real advantage... for example, when re-fitting the valve cover and ensuring the gasket stays centered. I don't think I'd ever leave both sides open and vertical if there was any wind at all - that's just asking for disaster no matter what you use to prop it. But inside the garage when working on the motor, yeah, I'd see it as pretty useful.

I made the original,, with a 45 degree cut so I could add an MG pin.. plus the ledge for the bonnet is deeper, and safer in windy conditions

Yes Steve. That is the quintessential KISS :)
Nicely done mate. I think I will be making two of those.
