MG TD TF 1500 - Correct Battery?
What is the size of the correct battery for the TF? Also, what is the best looking original type cover and face? PJ |
Paul S Jennings |
Many places sell black batteries with easily removable stickers leaving a plain black case. Walmart, advance auto, autozone and Interstate all have such a battery. Here is an interstate my friend Gene put in his TD yesterday, with one of my LUCAS stickers.

I believe a 24F is the standard battery case size, although many smaller batteries with modern technology have more cranking power. Tom Lange MGT Repair |

Dave, do we have an email address? Or, a web site? PJ |

DasanderATaolDOTcom. Such a deal at only $5.00 postage included. Be well, David |

Paul, You can try these people: http://www.antiqueautobattery.com/batteries/british/G27L.html John |

A possibility though pricey. Been using one for 3 years. Dan http://www.antiqueautobattery.com/batteries/british/G27L.html |

Paul: With the superb job you are doing you owe your car one of the batteries John and Dan are talking about. I have had one for 5 years now and its a solid state battery that needs no maintenance nor trickle charging. And it says Lucas with the correct caps too :-) ![]() |

The original battery in the TD was a Group 27. Peter TD 5801 |

Question for Christopher Couper What is the source of the "helmet" type battery terminals? Do they come with pos and neg wires attached? |
T W Moore |
I got my complete set from Rhode Island Wiring & was very happy with both the cables & the service. They are about as close to original as you can get. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

I got mine from Rhode Island Wiring too. 100% correct. David |

Thanks guys for all this info! It sure is a big help. Didn't know about Rhode Island Wiring, now I know where to get the battery cables. Chris, the battery you, John & Dan mentioned is the one I am thinking about. Didn't know it was a maintenance free one. When I started this project, I didn't know it was going to put me in the poor house. Oh well, the wife can eat the steak, I'll eat beans for a while! Grin. PJ |

Can single battery caps be (easily) modified to replace the three-gang caps like the ones on David's battery? I haven't looked for caps at a local battery recycler yet. Single caps, a LUCAS decal, and helmet terminals would look good to the casual observer. Lonnie TF7211 |

Not "correct" ...however, smaller leaves room for some essentials! Spare Oil (In an old Marvell tin can) Spare Brake fluid (Also in period tin can) Most importantly, an Emergency Roadside OSH! (For when things go terribly wrong.) Just sayin' ![]() |
