MG TD TF 1500 - Correct Thermostat For MG TF 1500

I have been through the archives where there is a lot of discussion about the set up for the TD. Haven't found much on the TF which I understand it is simpler.

I have not thermostat at the moment so haven't any reference point for the replacement.

I don't really want to start fiddling with a modern replacement and would rather just drop in the original style with the brass sleeve for the bypass.

I found these on Ebay - they both are listed as fitting the MG TF.

One is at 72 degrees :

The other is at 86 degrees:

Can't see any at 82 degrees ( which moss lists as 'standard')

At £20 they are a good price :-)

Any recommendations - or even better search criteria to use / correct part numbers?

I am in Ireland - same climate as the UK..

Hi Dave,
the stat is a standard one used by millions of UK cars.
Just go to your local motor factor and look through stock till you get the right temp.
If they query. just say it is for an MGB (they will remember them ).
They should be more in the £5 range, even Halfords stock them. The one listed probably expensive because it is a bellows type.I have used modern waxstats for year the present one has been in for about 15 years.
The TD is a different matter as the stat covers the bypass port.

Although mine is a 1250 I think it's the same and it's just and open and close and no bypass. My personal experience with the old time bellows is they're not as reliable as a modern wax 'stat. When I assembled my engine I simply grabbed one off the shelf that I had for some other application that had a temperature I wanted and popped it in. They are, I think, 52mm and that's common in the US as well.

The advantage of a bellows stat is that it fails open while a waxstat fails closed.
As I said earlier my waxstat has lasted 15 so far.

Great thanks guys. Ray I searched your part number and came up with it straight away + about 5 cross reference part numbers.

Should be sorted :-)
