MG TD TF 1500 - Cover Plate Bolt Replacement
One of the upper bolt holes for my read head cover plate is stripped. I plan to drill and tap the hole to accept a 3/8" SAE bolt. Can someone confirm that there is enough cylinder head material to allow this repair? Thx. |

Why not install a helicoil? Then you never have to remember the one odd bolt. |

That's a possibility. Is there enought material to allow a repair? |

I put a helical in for a stripped generator mounting bracket hole. there seemed to be plenty of material. I am sure the head would be the same. The helical outside diameter is not really that much larger and it remains as per original. |

The tapped diameter to accept the helicoil/recoil insert is 9.5 mm. There is enough material to allow you to instal an insert quite safely. An M8x1 insert kit is worth the investment as by now most of the threads, particularly in the timing cover and bell housing to sump could be suspect, and it keeps everything standard. |

I agree with W Routley, a helicoil kit for 8 X 1mm is definitely one kit to own. the 8 X 1mm thread is the most common thread in the XPAG engines. You can get a kit from McMaster - Carr http://www.mcmaster.com/ or MSC http://www.mscdirect.com/ Cheers - Dave |

I noticed Doug Pelton (FTFU) stocks these kits and sells the inserts individually. |

I looked at his catalog and Doug has a very good price on the kit. Cheers - Dave |

Corey - check the screw first; the screw will usually strip before the head. Tom Lange |
