MG TD TF 1500 - Cradle supporting rear of gearbox

I have two examples of the cradle/bracket supporting the rear of the gearbox. I believe both are likely to the OE. Both have the same idiosyncrasy in that the holes in the tabs that support the prop shaft rails are not symmetrical and centred, especially the holes on the LHS both being so close to the edge.

If both brackets were not the same I would assume that my original one (top of photo) was just an error at the time of fabrication but with both being so similar I am left wondering. Any ideas on this point?

In the other photo the support rails can be seen also to not be symmetrical as I would have expected. Any advice on whether mine look original would be appreciated. I can see no reason why the welded kink on the left hand rail is behind the second hole while on the RHS it is in front of that hole. Also I cannot understand why the front holes (both sides) were not centred (even roughly centred). Again, any thoughts would be welcomed.

Kind regards,
Michael

Hi Michael
Just looking at your pics--
The centre hole in the bracket is offset for/aft and I reckon they've offset the outer mounting holes so that the bracket will only fit one way round so that the centre hole is offset in the correct direction
Makes it almost impossible to mount up wrongly--

Willy,
As usual, you are very observant. I have not started to reassemble my drivetrain, and I had not noticed the fore/aft phenomenon. As you can see, mine are the same.

Reactivating.

Has anybody figurecwhich way this should be oriented?

Should the hole be biased to the front or the rear?

Thanks.

Peter,

The attached diagram from the workshop manual, shows the web towards the rear therefore the hole goes at the rear.
