MG TD TF 1500 - Cross brace attachment to wheel well - TF
I'm replacing both rear wheel wells. What I haven't been able to determine is if and how they should be attached to the cross brace. Horst Schach has an illustration in his TD restoration book that shows "white hot rivets being flattened". Mine were bolted with a 1/4" masonite shim between the wheel well and the brace. In the attached picture you can see the reason doublers were used; the metal on the cross brace is Swiss cheese. I'll cut the cross brace and remove it for repair. You can also see the shim I removed. Does one belong there? ![]() |

Here's how it was attached:

Jim, I ran into a somewhat similar situation with 'the53'. I can only suggest that you want to be cautious of the effect that this attaching is having on the location and angle of the hinge pillars. BTW, the shim doesn't belong there. Bud |

My TF had solid rivets which I removed when I pulled the tub apart for repair. Fortunately no rust in either cross brace or wheel wells. there hdad ben some accident damage to the rear quarters and the wood was rotten. It is all back together now but I haven't replaced the rivets yet. The rivets had a small washer under the peened over end (wheel well side) I am still deciding exactly what to do. I have some 1/4" bolts that I have ground down the hex head to make a flat rivet head and cut off the thread to leave a plain shank. I am considering installing them by heating with oxy and peening the end over. Alternatively I might just use small nuts and bolts. |

Does anyone have any pictures of the rivets installed? I'd like to duplicate the look. |

Not sure if this helps.

J.E., Not saying they are correct due to to many issues, but my TF had four Phillips head screws in these positions. They looked very similar to the rear TF splash pan screws with a wide head and British threads. PJ

LaVerne's is right on. Bud |

Just for the record. My pic is of a TD and not a TF. |
L E D LaVerne |
My TD was fastened the same as LaVerne's. |

Thanks guys, That's exactly what I needed. LaVerne, Is that an upholstery tack strip at the top of the brace? |
J E Carroll |
Yes, Jim, that tack strip is an OEM piece. I'm guessing TFs and TDs are the same in that area. Bud |
Bud Krueger |
My TF was just about like Verne's TD except the tacking strip was in a different position. JB ![]() |
