MG TD TF 1500 - Cylinder head gasket

just a Question to you
I get my new Cylinder Head Gasket and I'm surprised that the cut outs have another cut out then the Block and the head have. What‘s wrong or is it OK?

GK, that's the way both the old one (I have no idea whether it was OEM or not) I took out was and the new one that I put in is. Seems to work. No idea why it's shaped that way.

The combustion chamber is wider than the cylinder diameter so it can fit in larger valves.

GK, as shown below.

Thank you guys it sounds logic for me.

By the way, I have an another question concerning head gasket installation.
Is it recommended to apply some fluid gasket material around the water channels?
GK Guenter

Back then, cars were taxed by the "engine size" which was designated by the bore. To minimize the tax, car makers went to small bores with long stroke. That would generally mean smaller valves and compromised power, so MG engines were given combustion chambers larger than the bore.
