MG TD TF 1500 - Cylinderhead thichness MKII

Hello all,

When reassembling the XPAG TD3 engine I noticed a little problem. (or not?)
I found that the valves were only just adjustable. Most setscrews were almost completely at the beginning of their travel. See also the picture.
It has new rockers, the head and block were machined and the head now measures 75 mm or 2.953 "

I read that the nominal thickness is 3.022, but for the TD3 engine a bit less for higher copmression ?

Is this normal ?

Thanks
Gert

Gert, the standard head thickness for TD MKII and 1250TF is 2.962 in. It would appear that your head has only had about .010 in. removed. I would not expect that you would run out of adjustment. Perhaps Tom Lange, our MKII guru will jump in. Bud

Gert,

if I remember it right, there are two different length of adjuster screws. The longer ones were used from XPAG/TD2/17289 on in conjunction with shorter pushrods. I think they also used these parts for the TD3 engines after that date.

Seems to be a parts mix of older and newer design components you try to assemble.

What cam did you use? Moss has a set of shorter pushrods for use with the large based Crane cams.
George Butz

Its the cam that was in there when purchased. I guess an original one. Can't be sure though.
Same goes for the pushrods.

If brand new rockers, could they be effectively longer? Maybe pop one of the end ones off and compare to see if the tip or the threaded boss is longer. Otherwise, valve stem height could be suspect? Needs Len Fanelli or someone to comment on that. George

Gert, the new rockers supplied by both Moss & Abingdon spares, have the same issue. I have just installed 1 rocker & only have perhaps 1/2 turn from
adjustment of .016" to the screw backed out all the way.
If one can not loosen the screw enough, the pad may need to be dressed, following the same arc.

If you check my posts in the archive you will find I have reported many problems I experienced on this subject.

The final solution for me was to purchase and install the longer version adjustment screws.

Well,
I can,in fact, adjust them all to the proper clearance but, as Len also found, most of them are nearly backed out full.
I was thinking maybe to raise the pedestals a little. Moss even has these washers them for sale.
GD Nijhof

Put shims under the rocker shaft pedestals ???
