Of limited use now that Steve Neal is no longer able to do these conversions. He has sold all his machinery, and I have not heard that anyone else has taken over. It used to be that these were $50-$100 transmissions, and that made them a good candidate for a swap, but when the transmission alone started costing $1,000, it became less and less worth it. Hi Tom, I am not familiar with the Datsun conversion and wonder how the fixed bell housing is mated to the T series engine. Also is the Datsun box shorter than the Ford meaning no engine shift forwards. I am only asking out of curiosity since I have fitted a Ford box using a bell housing from Andy King. I take your point about the price of the Datsun box. You can buy a Ford Type 9 in the UK for £175 and overhaul kits are readily available. Jan T |

This FL transmission was a kit that a great guy in Southern Maine did, modifying the Datsun transmission to fit the TD or TF. The customer supplied a transmission which Steve completely disassembled, and then shortened the bell housing by cutting it off in his jig. He then welded an adapter ring onto the transmission (with GREAT accuracy), and rebuilt the it. He supplied the complete kit with a new clutch, spigot bushing, drive shaft, speedo cable, throw-out bearing, shifter, transmission cover, and rear mount that had to be drilled to fit. The nicest thing was that it was a COMPLETE kit (except for the speedo-adjusting gears), that required no shifting of the engine - much better than the Ford kit. Unfortunately, after a stroke, Steve stopped doing the modifications, and sold his machine tools. I still have two of his transmissions set aside, waiting to go into the "right" cars! Steve would even rebuild the tranny if required which he did with mine as fifth gear had been almost destroyed by lugging. My mechanic said that it was the best and most complete installation kit he had ever seen. Thanks Steve and all the best to you. Jim |
