MG TD TF 1500 - DB 10 Location

Can anyone see a problem with mounting the DB 10 in this location? I am adding turn signals. I would move the brass tag up a bit. Anyone have a better idea?

I dont think its water proof.
They are usually inside on the back of the tool box.

That’s probably why I haven’t found many pictures......good info!

Of course, that means more #%*+ time underneath the dashboard....

Bill, that's probably where your wiring harness expects it to be, back of the tool box. Check your harness. You'll find that locating the flasher can is another pain. Bud

Aftermarket/add on turn harness kits originally had wiring for placing the relay where you have it on the firewall. At some point, new harnesses were available for mounting there, or under the dash where the late '53 cars originally had it mounted. As the early cars didn't have turns, no place is original in my opinion. I mounted mine on the firewall- same as in your photo- and it is super easy to clean the contacts and fiddle with it when needed. And if an original box, it will need attention sooner or later. Bill,
FWIW I mounted mine on the side under the dash. Easier to get to but dry and out of the way.
Mine is RHD so it is on the passenger side, but should still be out the way even on LHD TD.

Also used LED's now and mounted the electronic flasher unit inside the old Lucas holder.

On mine I pulled the wires back inside and mounted the relay inside the car but the flasher outside to the tool box. It will be interesting to see if the harness we have here for the 1250 will have the wiring inside out outside of the car. At least I expect to find some as the owner wanted to ad turn signals.

On the TF the relay box was mounted below the regulator box but that isn't an option on the TD with the horns there.

Bill,
That is exactly where my DB10 is mounted and it was like that when I bought the car.

Thanks, all..

I spoke with Josh at British Wiring today, where I bought the supplemental harness. He says that his harness was made for a DB 10 to be mounted on the outside of the firewall approximately where I have it positioned in the pic above. Another problem solved...

Bill: You can wire the box up quickly with all connectors before you mount it. You are overthinking this.

Just make sure your harness can reach the back of the toolbox and mark and drill the holes. Wire the harness and then mount the box. Easy Peasy.

I may do that...... there are three dark green wires coming out of the harness just below the three for the flasher. They will probably have to come through the fire wall for the DB 10 wires to reach. I believe they to be are attached to one of the posts of the regulator. So I may have to lengthen them and run them back through the firewall. Will look hard at all that and post a pic or two of what I do.

FWIW I mounted my flasher inside the firewall over by the dimmer switch (later car just prior to turn signals). I think I just zipped tied it to the harness but you could attach it anywhere.

Your cars dimmer switch is on the dash of course. I was just trying to illustrate I did not want mine to show and that was where the wires fit it OK.

mounted mine on the underside of the firewall, above the driver side. keeps it dry

Bill,

Remember also that depending where you live and drive, it can get quite warm under the hood at the back.

I'd figure there's better temperature protection inside the firewall in the cockpit. Of course, the DB10 may be quite comfortable working in an elevated temperature location - anyone know?

David Padgett

As TRM and David pointed out it should be in the cabin with you. I left that point out when I said I mounted it "inside" the firewall. I really meant "under" the firewall.
Christopher Couper

This is how it ended up. First one is looking forward from the cockpit. Second is looking up from the floor. My back is killing me!

Looks good. Fortunately you should never have to climb up under there again in your lifetime. :-)

Hope so....
