MG TD TF 1500 - Declan's Beautiful tank level sensor

I received Declan's tank sensor yesterday and it is really something, I will try his suggestion to replace it without removing the tank. Sounds like a load of fun. I really don't want to do this again and Declan's approach should make that a reality.
Thankyou Sir.

Rod Jones

Declan, or someone, needs to explain how this device works. I do not quite understand it from the photos.
John Quilter (TD8986)

Thanks for the kind comments Rod!

John,
If you look at the first photo rotated it is easier to understand. It is a simple float switch. When the fuel goes low the float, which has an internal ring magnet, goes to the lower end stop and activates a reed switch which then drives the low fuel warning lamp on the dash. When you fill up the float rises and the lamp goes off.
The idea behind it is to have a non leaking float switch which, unkike the original, is the devil's own invention. The seals are cut from viton and the 3mm flange is laser cut. The screws are 3BA. It is easy to install with a small stubby screwdriver once you get the old switch out. The two upper screws on the original are a bit concealed. I fitted it on my car without removing the tank but having drained it first.
It works very well indeed.

Declan

Declan,
I think the only problem with the original is that people today do not run the level down often enough to keep the contacts clean.
I keep an eye on my consumption by putting in the same amount of fuel each time and running to the low light (or piezo buzzer in my case).
Never let me down in 50 years

Declan.Hello. How much fujel do you have left when the light comes on?

Ray,
It was not the contacts that were giving me problems, it was the small leaky gasket under the lid-a very bad design.

Thoralf,
I have it at approx. 12 litres. I can make longer ones which would have the light come on later (< 12 litres).

Ray how did you install the piezo buzzer in the circuit?
M Hyde

It is just wired in parallel with the bulb. Just connected to the bulb holder terminals, the float unit is only an earthing switch.

I did it because the light is hidden below the cowl edge (TF) and I do not see it in daylight.

Thanks Ray. I am the same and can't easily see the current warning lamp at my height in the seat. I may fit a switchable buzzer or a flashing LED somewhere.

Merv, I have an off switch, the buzzer gets annoying when you go over bumps.
I know that when it bump beeps I have 50/60 miles left in the tank.
