MG TD TF 1500 - Diaphragm Clutch

The bite point on the TF's clutch is rather high. When I fitted the 5 speed box I bought a friction plate off eBay and suspect it was either too thin or poor quality. Suitable plates are now available from the Octagon Club so a gear box out over the winter is now planned. However I recall an on line discussion about fitting a modern, diaphragm pressure plate. Does anyone know what type is suitable? I do not want to redrill and tap the flywheel but hope that the centres are metric so a modern one should be available.

I used an Alpine clutch. You have to remove one of the original locating dowels and install two additional to fit the Apline cover, which uses 3 total. This is best done by a competent shop to ensure it's perfectly centered. On the upside, the Alpine clutch is a stronger unit. On the downside, the throw is completely different, so your clutch will fully engage in the first quarter of travel and the pedal will be heavier. This takes some getting used to, unless you modify your pedal or linkage geometry to match.

Are Alpine clutch covers even available anymore? The one for my Alpine Series V has been NLA for ages.

I don't know. Mine came from the UK several years ago. If you find a used one you can have it rebuilt easily enough.

Manley Ford used to have a good setup with a lightened flywheel and a Cortina/Lotus pressure plate. He has a more competition style one now. Probably worth a shout.

Brown and Gammons sell the same setup: https://www.ukmgparts.com/catalogue/td-midcat-1-subtd37-clutch-and-flywheel
I have the lightened flywheel and it works great.

I think I've seen mention of a Nissan setup as well.

I have a diaphrag clutch and a roller bearing in my TD since 2012 and it works very well.
I have instructions with pics if someone want.
I can send in three weeks, because I‘m in holdays in the moment.

I believe that Declan Burns also makes a roller bearing throw-out kit.

If I were to buy that (which I want to), I would also buy his custom rod kit.

I believe it would make a sweet set-up.

HI All,

It wasn't an uprated clutch I was looking for but a more modern one I could buy at a good price from the local motor factor.
