MG TD TF 1500 - Dipstick Ditherer

Twice in the last year I have clumsily overfilled the engine with oil and twice I have had to straight away drain some off to get the correct level wasting time effort patience and oil

....don't say you have never done it!

Tonight I checked the gearbox level and its on the low mark so it's time for a top up. I fear my over enthusiastic nature will get the better of me again.

Does anyone have a clue what the fluid volume is for both engine and gearbox between the low marks on the dipstick and the high marks? (Assuming original dipsticks and sump)

Ray, I just reactivated a thread on this topic. The data under my name is for an engine with the ribbed sump. I don't know about the gearbox dipstick vs. content. Bud

Hello Bud

Thanks for doing that..Much appreciated....and very useful

Unless anyone else chimes in - I will over the next few days do a controlled and measured top up of the gearbox and report back.

We can't buy oil in quarts - so measurements will be in metric.

Those of us who look back with misty eyes to the good days before metrification in the UK still visualise measurements in inches, pints, yards, pounds and Fahrenheit !

I will post back after the weekend.

Thanks again Bud

I think the engine oil is 1 quart between the low and full.

Given the possibilities that the dipstick tube is either too long or too short thus destroying any credibility in the dipstick readings I suppose what one should do (I'm way too lazy and too cheap to actually do this) is to completely drain the system (being sure that the filter is fully drained) and then pour in precisely the correct amount of oil and then see where the oil reads on the dipstick. Then (here's where lazy and cheap come in) fully drain the system again and pour in just one quart shy of the correct amount of oil and check the dipstick. Then put in the remaining quart and see if the oil reads at the same place on the dipstick as it did the first time. Caveate - changing things lie oil filter housings/adapters, sump pans and the like probably renders "the correct amount of oil" an unknown.

Just noodlin'

Jud, see the reactivated thread "Dipstick Readings". that's virtually what I did.

Chris: it was about 3.75 quarts from Empty to Full.
