MG TD TF 1500 - Direction Indicator warning light

Hey everyone,

I am trying to figure out why my dash mounted turn signal indicator light is not working. It did work at one time. My car is negative ground. I am not getting any power at the light itself. I thought it was the entire light socket itself, so I bought a new one and have it hooked up hanging below the dash for now. There are only two wires going to the socket. A ground wire and #66 light green that go to the flasher unit connected to the "P" terminal. The flasher unit is also hanging under the dash for now (wired up). At one time I had a flasher unit that had a metal bracket that was bolted to the body of the car. It had to be replaced and I couldn't find one with the bracket. I wondered if the unit need to be grounded so I grounded it and still nothing. I assume the unit is supposed to get power from the Green #17 that goes to the A4 terminal of the control box? When the key is on the A4 is hot. I have tried switching the wires around as much as I could without touching the wires that have not been touch since the turn indicator light worked correctly. Still nothing. This has to be a simple fix, it is not that complicated? Maybe a issue with my direction indicator relay unit? The #23 green/brown wire that goes to the number one terminal on the direction indicator relay unit is also hot when the key is on. Anyway, probably way more information then you needed to hear.

Any thoughts on where to look?

Thanks guys,

Rich

Rich, I think the solution is quite simple. Some of the flasher units (I bought two for a LED setup), although they appear to look appropriate with the three connectors, will not activate the dash light. If you look at the Moss site for example you will see an extra wire leading from the top of the unit, making a ground from the replacement flashers. No way I could get mine to work so I finally had to buy a "proper" one. .... Chris

I have a Triumph TR3 with the same problem. I think I have traced it down to a bad flasher. I have a new one being shipped today from TRF. Should have it maybe Friday or Saturday. I will let you know if it makes a difference.

Have you checked the circuit with a circuit tester? It should be easy to trace. I've done it and I'm no electrician. Use the wiring diagram in the WM as a guide.

I did that with mine and everything checked out, only the P terminal on the flasher was not working. You can tie the light green indicator wire to the load terminal on the flasher, and it will work. Only thing if you do that, is the indicator light will be on when the key is on, as that terminal is hot. The indicator will flash when the turn signals are turned on. On my car the indicator does not draw enough to make the flasher flash.

Gary, your flasher is the 'wrong' one. I wish I could be more specific. I ran into that issue before. Bud

G Parker,

Yes I have tested the circuit, everything seems to check out fine. Any word on how that new flasher worked out for you?

I am thinking the problem is the flasher as well.

Thanks for the help so far guys.

Hi Rich

The new flasher just arrived, and I put it in. Everything works like it should now. The light green wire from the indicator light plugs into the P terminal in the flasher, and now works.
Hope your problem is as simple. I did order a flasher from TRF and it is a Lucus, rather than try one from the auto parts store.

Ok great. I will give it a go. What is TRF?

Thanks Gary

My guess is -- 'The Roadster Factory'. Are they still around? Bud

Bud is correct. The Roadster Factory. Yes they are still around and thriving.

Just ordered a new flasher from TRF. If this thread stays active after I get the flasher I will let you all know how it turns out.

Thread reactivated!

Hey guys got my new Lucas brand flasher from TRF last week and installed it. Everything is working fine now! The new flasher came with the mounting bracket installed on it. The one I was trying to use did not have one. At one point I thought this bracket might serve as some sort of ground. However, when I first hooked up the new Lucas flasher I did not mount it. It was simply hanging from the dash and it worked! I emailed Moss and asked them if there was anything special with the flasher they sold compared to one you would buy at NAPA, the answer was no. So why did this solve my problem? No idea why, but I don't care at this point, until next time.

Thanks for all your help and the referral to TRF!
