MG TD TF 1500 - Dished speedometer take apart/rebuild
Hi Everyone, I have a dished TD speedometer that seems to work ok with a drill on the end of the speedo cable. But the needle only goes down to 10 when idle. Thus I probably need to lubricate / adjust something inside. Not sure how to get it apart. I get the dish off, the inside ring, take out the 2 screws on the back, but the trip odometer reset knob is far too long to get out of the case. I know there is a trick that you can share. Trick or treat! /dan |

Dan - There is a pin that goes through the reset shaft and the shaft extension. Press that pin out and remove the extension, then you can remove the works. - Dave |

Dan, There should be a pin that holds the trip extension on to the rod coming out of the speedo. Look close to the outside of the case and see if it is there. On mine it is a very small split pin and easily removed. Rod |

dan, when you get it apart use clock oil for lubrication after cleaning. regards, tom http://www.clockoil.com/ one of many sources when you google search clock oil |

Thanks for the advice, I got the stem off by pulling the split pin. I had to access the split pin through back light hole. Is clock oil the same as sewing machine oil? Is there any documentation on a speedometer? Mine seems to move ok, but it doesn't return to the post, it sits at about 13 mph. |

sewing machine oil is better than WD-40..beyond that i do not know the composition...when i doubt i go with the label. regards, tom |

Dan, is the needle 'free floating' there? Can you easily make it swing? If so, then the needle needs to be pulled off of the shaft and reinstalled to a position a bit CCW from the post. Then you have to lift the end of the needle and move it to just over the post. This provides a small amount of tension. This is part of the calibration process. Good luck. Bud |
