MG TD TF 1500 - Do I Need a Heat Shield
I have check the archives where there is discussion on carb heat shields. The bonnet sides are off my TF at the moment and I have easy access to to the engine. The car has a pusher SU pump and an electric fan. Sould I fit a heat shield to the carbs whilst I can get to the engine? I have found section of bright stainless ducting that was left over when I fitted a new cooker hood in our kitchen (a major annoyance since it kept me away from the TF rebuild for a couple of days) and this would be ideal to make the shield Jan T |

If it wasn't an issue before the rebuild then you don't/won't suffer from vapour lock Jan, so why bother? They weren't fitted originally & these days are only used if & when vapour lock becomes an issue. I reckon it falls into the category of "if it aint broke, don't fix it"... I'd just move onto the next item on your list & deal with it if/when it becomes a problem after the car's back on the road. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

Jan, If you are not required to use garbage gas with ethanol in it, like we have here in the states, I wouldn't worry about it. JMHO. PJ |

Hi Jan, In our climate I don't think we have to worry about vapour lock. We have had our TF for forty years, have toured France & Spain in the summer no problem. Even on slow exhibition runs on rallies never V locked. I think the pressure pump cured all the problems. Ray TF 2884 |

jAN, it doesn't seem as if you need a shield,, when you do finally get the engine to where you are ready to install the side panels, make sure that your fuel bowls are rotated away from the hot exhaust manifold as indicated in this marked up Dave Braun photo,, Thanks again Dave!! Steve ![]() |

Thanks for the responses. Yes Paul we can only buy the c**p, ethanol, lead free petrol in the UK. Because of the unelected beurocrats who control the EU paint stripper is now useless, solder just doesn't melt anymore and I am unable to buy an inspection lamp bulb of greater than 40 watts. I am from Scotland and if they start to tinker with Glenfiddich Malt I will emigrate to the moon. Jan T |
