MG TD TF 1500 - Does anyone know if I can use a DOT 3 and 4 synth
Does any one know if I can use a DOT 3and 4 synthetic fluid in my 51 MGTD? please let me know hngmn8@sbcglobal.net thanks Nathan |

Tom - DOT 3 and 4 were the recommended fluids for the T series. As for synthetic fluid - have you ever heard of a brake fluid plant? The word synthetic is being used as an advertizing gimmick of recent years - all brake fluid of any strip is a synthetic fluid. Cheers - Dave |

My name seems to have been hijacked here; I have nothing to do with this post, and do not know who Nathan is. Nathan - please do not post using my name! Tom Lange MGT Repair |

Reason I didn't get in on the subject, as I thought it was an unusual question from Tom, then I saw the signature. I had this happen to me last year and it took a while to clear it up. PJ |

Tom, PJ...one thing I notice is that your email address is right in your intro line when you post. Maybe that makes it too easy for someone to sign-up/register in your name???? |

It happens sometimes when you send a link from this forum while signed in. Always sign out before you share a link here. |

If you ever post a link from this forum whilst signed in, there will be a string in the the URL like: http://www2.mg-cars.org.uk/cgi-bin/or17?runprog=mgbbs&access= ...followed by a long, unique number associated with your account. Anyone clicking a link that has your number in it will be logged in as you. |

Thanks Rob for the details on how this happens. I have probably done that, but will make sure I don't do it again. |

Hmmm, Maybe I should write out the email address? PJ |

Tom and Paul, I do not think someone is trying to seal you identity. I was guilty of having my posts list under someone else’s name the first two times I posted/asked a question about 5 years ago. It took me some time to figure out what I did wrong, I then posted an explanation of how it happened and how I fixed it. I tried to look it up in the archives but cannot find it now. The information is a little fuzzy at this point, but it had something to do with; I had gotten a 51 TD and needed advice. I goggled my question. This site came up as an option, I then asked my question. (You guys were great about answering it). When I asked my question it posted under the last person whom had posted on the site. I had not joined correctly so the site defaulted to that person. Once I signed up correctly it now posts under my name. |

Yes Nathan, you can use DOT 3/4 in your car. The reason he has Tom's name there is that Tom posted a link to this forum somewhere and the old software this site uses has each user's personal id code right in the url (link). So anyone who clicks that will log in as the person who posted it. If posting links to this forum, be sure the id number is deleted from it. |

Nathan, have you thought about DOT 5? regards, tom |

Brake fluid. Synthetic Should be fine( go with dot 4 or 3/4). Dot 5. Longer shelf life but not compatible with 3 or 4 (or 5.1 if interested). Do not install it in a system that has 3 or 4 remnants, it will act like oil and water and leave bubbles. Dot 5 is also harder to bleed, as it like to trap bubbles, so take your time, and recheck the next day Toms account. Yes, it is a very bad security model, and should be fixed... Don't past links with the number after account= and you will be fine... I will update my fluids summary and post it soon. |

I talked with one of the Dot 3/4 manufacturers some time back to ask what they meant by synthetic (synthetic lubricating oil is completely different chemically from regular lubricating oil). Regular Dot 3/4 is made by separating glycol-ether from refinery streams whereas synthetic is produced by chemical reaction of component parts, but both are still glycol-ether. The synthetic should contain less 'contaminants' but still absorb water which is the main problem for DOT 3/4 fluids. DOT 5 is silicone based and will not absorb water. I replace my system with DOT 5 and it has been fine ever since. |
