MG TD TF 1500 - Door Hinges
With reference to the screws that hold the door hinges to the jamb/tub. Are they captive nuts, T-Nuts or double nuts? Before I loosen one I want to make sure I don't have to remove the panel. Thanks, Mort |

My TF has loose nuts - need a spanner to unscrew them. I have replaced the bolts and nuts with metric stainless ones. I am using nylock nuts. Cross head stainless metric bolts are readily available and inexpensive. Jan T |

They are not captive. Loose nuts and lock washers. Panel has to come off. |

I made and tapped threads in a plate fixed inside the rear body tiebar. This means I can remove the door at any time without disturbing the rear trim. I also replaced the doorstop pivot pin with a screw in pin. Ray TF 2884 |

Hi Ray, Did you clamp the plate to the rear of the pillar and then use the screw holes as a guide for drilling? I had considered making up captive nuts but found none of the holes to be square to the frame or parallel. In fact I cann't pull the hinge off with the screws still poking through. Because of the varying angles they bind. No way could I have used the centres from the hinge flap.I have found that the nuts need to be really tight and have used two per screw - one being a nylock. The major disadvantage of using stainless fixings is you cann't pick up the ones you inevitably drop into the box section with a magnet! Cheers Jan T |

Jan, Like Ray I started out making a tapped plate. My angles were so far off that you could not tighten the FH screws. The heads stuck out from the hinges. With captive nuts, you need to use the slots in the screws and they will get buggered. I drilled out the tapped holes and used washers, lock washers and nuts. Tightening with a box wrench. The washers were beveled to match the angle of the holes so the nuts pull square. ![]() |

Hi Jan, Yes I used the screw holes to drill and tap the plate (3/8" brass, as that is what I had). The holes are all different angles. See youtube MG TD Body Build as Hutson build the tubs the same way Carbodies did in the 50's, it is worth a look anyway just out of interest. I did not fasten the plates inside. When I have to remove the door I remove the screws one at a time and replace with stud bar to retain in place. Fitting carpets or removing gearbox is much easier with the doors out of the way, my back does not bend the way it did when I bought the TF 40 years ago. Ray TF 2884 |
