MG TD TF 1500 - Door problems

Out driving today and drivers door flew open and I ended up with a twisted hinge has anyone else come across this problem?
D Barnett

A common problem if the door bolt has not gone fully into the keeper. The door should just push home with a double click and no slack in the inside handle. The lock and keeper have a double taper and if correctly set tighten the lock and prevent accidentally opening.
Some owners fit a secondary locking device as belt and braces.

These safety latches provided by From the Frame Up are really great. They look good and provide ease of mind. I recommend them highly.

D Barnett: Sorry to hear of your experience. As others have point out there are solutions to mitigate or even prevent this event.

But feel good that you did not suffer the extreme: Some have experienced broken hinges and/or smashed rear fenders.

As Ray Lee has pointed out, it is essential that the door is fully in the secondary lock position.

To assist one getting to the full lock engagement re the 'double click',the striker base needs to be angled so that it accepts the lock barrel efficiently.

Taper wedges can be made out of wood.Fine domestic door nylon wedges can also be cut and sanded down to suit the angulation required.

The correct striker plate angle to align with the angle of the door lock itself, is very important to help prevent T type doors opening unexpectedly.

Using new wood in body tubs also helps stabilise the door locks. I don't use non original 'extra safety'
catches.

Look up 'door lock latch' in archives. The one I showed is the original Silent Travel latch, not fitted to T Types ( you will see that the lock covers on our cars already have a cut out for them. I have them on mine as a back up.
If the bolt is not fully home and you hit a bump the inertia drops the handle and the door opens.
