MG TD TF 1500 - Drilling TD Glove Box Trim Screws
Searched the archive with no success. I know there are threads on this but no can find. There are 32 2# chromed slot heads that secure the trim to the glove box & to the glove box door. There was some discussion as to the best way to drill these holes vertically in a newly made dash. A Dremmel & a drill with a right angled head were both suggested. As I possess neither & couldn't see the sense in buying a tool just for this job, my solution was to use what I had to hand. In my set of metric taps & dies I have a small chuck for use with the smaller taps. It was too large to secure the 1/16" drill bit, however by using 4 panel pins in the chuck, I was able to trap & tighten the bit & then drill the holes by hand. See pic. Nifty huh? Clever. I have a couple of those handles but never thought of using them like that. I've always wanted a right-angle battery drill and would have used your project as an excuse to go to the nearest big box store and get one. When I start on my dash I'll not let that opportunity be lost. Jud |

I guess I'm the opposite. If I have a good excuse to buy a tool I will. It always ends up that I WILL use it afterwards on other projects so it has always been worthwhile. |

Where there is a will, there is a way - good improvisation Peter. Cheers - Dave |

Good idea Peter. Gotta go with Larry, though - I've used my 90 degree Dremel more times than I can count since that project. Did some holes in a furnace duct last night and it was just the tool I needed. Jud; Measure the head on a full sized right angle drill before you buy. Many are too big for the task. Dan |

Thanks guys. Should also have mentioned the other factor. I'm resource rich but thanks to the money pit cash poor... Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

Ha... you've never had a real "Money Pit" until you've had a *boat*. A 'boat buck' is $100, since virtually nothing costs less than that. (Trust me, I know... in addition to the 5 LBC's, I have [he said, breathing deeply and praying for God's mercy] 5 boats!) And Peter, that's a pretty slick solution - one I'll definitely remember! |
