MG TD TF 1500 - Drive Shaft Fasteners/Bolts

I am just tidying up after a gearbox swap and have an impending rear end swap planned.

I ordered new bolts to attach the driveshaft to the rear flange of the gearbox but they came without washers and/or lock nuts. Nylock or Philidas type.

I gather they should be Philidas, but what size bolts/nuts should I use. or should I just grab some lock washers that fit and be done.

I have already established the heads face the universal joints. but size has me baffled.

Thanks,

Tom will tell you now is a good time to get the driveshaft balanced.
I measured one I swapped out. The holes are 0.315" so the bolt should be BSF-5/16.
I would use Philidas. I believe they were the original ones.
Be careful reassembling. the holes are NOT symmetrical. You can get the flange 90 degrees off and only be able to get 2 bolts in.

I have done that twice.

5/16 BSF x 1 1/2 with philidas nuts.

I just found I left these off my fastener list. I will add them and update the list, thanks.

Thanks Bruce, I did search your list first.

1.5” could be a bit long?

I am holding off on the rebalance in case I have to have the shaft shortened when I fit the 4.3 rear end during spring.

At that time I will get it done even I don’t have to shorten it.

Thanks for the heads up.

Dave Clark built me a 4.1 rear and no changes to the drive shaft were necessary. Unbolt the old and bolt in the new! PJ

PJ Jennings

I have a Dave Clark 4.3 ready to go in there.

Soon.

Hope I don’t have to shorten the drive shaft.

Only reason to have a shorter drive shaft is if you replace the gearbox with a 5 speed. Steve Niel made me a shorter shaft to go with his gearbox many years ago. Had no issus with it at all, I also now have a Dave Clark rear end and new half shafts. Great mod and now have 5 forward gears I can use. With the original gearbox the first gear of the 5 speed was only good for stump pulling and I had to start in 2nd. all better now.

Rod Jones

I am thinking of a 5 speed while the UK Pound is down but also watching the pennies right now.

First I need to get all the stuff I have here into the car.

P.G. I changed my rear end ratio to a 4.3 and no drive shaft modification is necessary.

Thanks, as soon as I check the fit I will have it balanced.
