MG TD TF 1500 - Driveline removal
I usually work on MGB's and MGA's, but I am in the process of removing the engine and transmission from a '51 TD, for a friend. Is it recommended to remove the engine and transmission separately, or as a unit, like with the MGB? The eight, very long, oil pump, mounting bolts are certainly no joy. Two of them will not clear the frame rail, after being undone, and thus prevent the pump's removal. Does anyone have advice on this, other than removing the front engine mount, and lifting the engine up about two inches? I suspect the front engine mount rubber has seriously compressed, since the engine is sitting low enough that the fan belt cannot be removed due to interference from the front cross-member. Are there any other peculiarities, specific to a TD, that I should "look-out" for? |

I find that removing the engine and trans together are unquestionably the best approach, once the floorboards are out. You can cut a corner notch out of the floorboards to leave them in place, but that rather encourages engine heat and fumes to enter the car, and ruins the floorboards I also remove the steering shaft from the cloverleaf flange and pull it up and out of the way, which helps clear things. The engine can be moved so that the oil pump bolts don't hit at all. Look in the archives - there is plenty there. Tom Lange MGT Repair |

If it was me I'd remove them both as a unit, do everything you need to do out of the car & stick it back in the same way. Two operators & an engine hoist (one just to guide the box in)& it's straightforward. Peter TD 5801 |

Above advise spot on. If you are pulling the engine, do both together. It is easy to pull just the tranny with floorboards/interior out however. Remember to remove the ground strap on the left bell housing area, or you engine hoist will do it for you. George |

JR... Worthwhile to remove Rad and shell as a unit. Engine and trans as a unit, and I think with all accessories in place. Remove the gearshift lever for added clearance. Where in Ontario are you? |

I have always pulled both engine and transmission out as a unit, and left the floorboards in place. Once you get the tranny far enough ahead and off the rear mount, I use the boards to support tranny as it drops down to clear the fire wall. Working by myself, I have had it out in 4 hrs and 30 min. Putting it back in, is another matter. George |

Thanks all. C.R. Tyrell - I'm in a little town 25 miles North of Barrie - Wyevale. Half way between Midland and Wasaga Beach. |
