MG TD TF 1500 - Dual tire mount

I'm just curious. Did MG ever make a dual spare tire mount for disc wheels?

Illustrated List of Service Parts, Section P:

"Double Spare Wheel Carrier", under Optional Extras (appears to be when Dunlop 6.00x15 competition tyres are used). The individual parts are a wheel, tyre and tube, distance pieces (3), and anchor plate.

See also:
"Double Spare Wheel Carrier assembly" 500164, when used with a luggage carrier. Presumably the different distance pieces listed here are longer to clear the luggage rack.

BUT - I have a parts book that was owned by a factory mechanic or dealer and is replete with pen annotations, new numbering, and temporary Amendment sheets printed in red, where the clearly-knowledgeable owner has crossed out the luggage-rack carrier name and part number, and has written "FSNA", which meaning eludes me. The last two letters could be for Not Available.

Tom have you seen one of these first hand?

Not a TD/TF. Most of the UK hill-climb pictures one sees of cars with dual spares (more rear weight) are of TC or earlier models, not TD.

Tom:

Were Dunlop "6.00x15 competition tires" ever provided as an option from the factory?
If so, do you have any documentation of this?

Thanks

The "factory-team" of MG TD's which took part in the 1950 Alpine Rally were equipped with dual spare wheels.
Hope this helps...

Mark - Parts book, p. P2 - under Competition Tyres. I've never seen any, but I'm not sure I would notice the difference.

I was just curious what the adaptor looked like. You mentioned that your sheet showed (3) items? Makes me wonder if it was some sort long lug nut with a stud 3-4" long sticking out of it to register the second wheel? Or if it was simply longer bolts coming off the tire rack and six nuts were used to hold the two rims in place?

Bill - the parts list shows:
ventilated disc wheel - 1
tyre, tube - 1
anchor plate - 1
distance-piece - 3
wheel bolt - 3
intermediate nut - 3

I assume the anchor plate fits over the existing studs on the spare tire carrier, with intermediate nuts to hold it down. The "distance piece" was probably a long stud, probably hex like extended lug nuts, internally threaded on one end, and threaded on the other, to screw onto the wheel studs. The wheel fits over the threaded portion of the distance piece, and is tightened with a lug not.

Thanks Tom I think we are envisioning similar items. I would be interested in seeing these items if someone out there has them.

Now I don't want to be a nuisance but a film of the 1950 Alpine has a 3 seconds close-up shot of the double spare wheel carrier on car #47. You can see the second spare wheel's inside facing out and a chrome wheel cover attached to it.
So the questions which arises is; how would you attach a wheelcover on the inside of the wheel ? On the anchor plate ????
Look at 15min-45sec of this film:

I was perusing thru the new Abingdon Spares catalog today. The dual spare tire mount kit for disc wheels is available (Accessories page 74).

65-012A: LTD

Dunno, Nick, unless it is a home-made rig. The wheels certainly look larger than stock.

I wonder if it has been done for dual spare wire wheels (but on a TD).

Tom,
So in all we can only guess on how these parts actually looked and how they were put together to attach a second spare wheel to the existing carrier. The Nuffield parts list isn't helpfull either as there are no drawings of the parts. What is even more amazing is that they made two different sets of parts ! Surely one would expect them to market only the one which fits also when the luggage carrier is installed as that one automatically fits every car....
IMHO the fact that the rally cars had a chrome wheelcover on the inside of the second spare, indicate a factory installment.Abingdon always being meticulous in the preparation of their competition cars...
Best wishes,

Matt Cavicke at Abingdon wrote to say that their kit - available for both early and late, Whitworth and SAE - are sets of the three studs to permit dual spares - no adapter plate necessary.

At $11.95 for the complete set of three long studs, it's a blazing bargain! Parts 65-012 ans 012A. I'm going to order one of each.
