MG TD TF 1500 - Dynamo armature

OK so not a good day. Dropped my starter motor armature in a bucket of diesel I was using for cleaning purposes and my wife fell of her horse!!!! Anyway am attempting to "dry out" the armature and will see in a couple of days the end result. As a pessimist am now considering that perhaps a new Dynamator Dynamo/Alternator conversion is the way to go. Any advice please?

I assume you mean you dropped the generator armature and not the starter motor armature.

I don't see any permanent damage. Blow it off with compressed air and proceed. If it was working good before, I'd stick with it rather than make the transition to alternator.

The wires are/were coated with lacquer from the factory. It is unlikely diesel would remove the lacquer.

Blow it out, dry it off, and lub the bearings, it should be fine.

Thanks for the positive comments. Drying out at the moment remain optimistic.

As far as converting your system to an alternator, buy the one made in the UK, NOT the Dynamator made in, I think, China! Their very poor quality! The tach drive on them looks like an afterthought. I have a new "Dynamator" under the bench that is junk! The company doesn't even want it back, they sent me a refund for the cost. PJ

JM,

Diesel oil is not conductive, so I don't think you're in trouble there.

However a film of diesel is likely to attract dust which, over time, will destroy your armature.

I suggest that before you blow it off with air, you immerse it in wood alcohol (Nh3Oh), also known a methyl hydrate. Its cheap and is low enough in the solvent table to remove the diesel, but not remove any wire coating or similar insulation - providing you do it quickly. Over time, methyl hydrate can indeed, dissolve some lacquer-like glues, so dip it, agitate it quickly and blow it off immediately.
