MG TD TF 1500 - Electrical Relay

Not sure if the cover is on correctly and because the numbers are on the cap, does anyone know what numbers correspond to the longer connectors on the bottom of the unit? 4 long ones and 4 short ones. I don't want to hook this thing wrong. I found no corresponding numbers on the connectors. Thanks. PJ

Pic of what your working with?

Sorry about that, here's a shot of the top and bottom. The long tabs are under 3-4-7-8 as it is now. Need to know if this is correct. PJ

And the bottom.

Paul I just bought a replacement box from moss and installed it the other day. Unfortunately the car is not at my present location but will be there later this afternoon and I can shoot a pic with the cover oriented correctly If someone doesn't come up with an answer for you first

Here's a picture of mine before rewiring my car. My thumb is covering the end of the unit with the triangular tab at the end where the 4 and 8 terminals are located. Your cover as shown in your first picture is oriented correctly.

4 & 8 are coils with a common point to the can, earth

has a good workthrough.

See http://www.ttalk.info/Directionals.htm There is a tab between terminals 6 and 7 that locates the cover (At least there should be.) Bud

Thanks guys, now I know my cover is on correctly. Fortunately the new Moss harness is marked very well and color coded as per wiring diagram. Have to do some tinning the grub screw connections with solder, all should go very well. Hopefully! PJ

Bud, Very sorry I forgot to thank you for posting the link to the photos, extremely helpful! Thank you. PJ

Paul - "Have to do some tinning the grub screw connections with solder"
Instead of tinning the wires, why don't you get some crimp on ring terminals, they are much easier to take on and off the terminals without damaging the wires. It is also more original. Cheers - Dave

Dave, How will ring connectors work using grub screws. Maybe I'm misunderstanding the term, ring connectors. I did think about narrow spade connectors for the screw to set on. PJ
Paul S Jennings

Paul

The way to go is use "boot lace connectors", you will need the correct crimping pliers to install them.

Depending on your desire to pursue originality you could even buy colour coded items, however plain ones are easy to procure from an electrical wholesaler such as "Element 14".

Using these means you do not have a fatigue point where the tinning on the wire terminates.

Sorry Paul, I should have said a fork type lug. Cheers - Dave

I used flag spade terminals- that is what was on my car's original harness. (got the terminals from Rhode Island Wiring)

Jim, The Moss harness is set up that way also, it's just the bitter ends for the grub screws need tinning so they don't part/fray when tightening them down. I tinned all the bare ends. If someone in the future asks me to wire another T series, I'm leaving town! PJ
Paul S Jennings

Oh, sorry, I misunderstood. I ,too, tinned those wires that go under the grub screws....

I've been following this with casual interest and pondering what the function of this relay box might be. I could not recall seeing on on my TD and finally curiousity got the better of me so I donned woolen scarf and toboggan cap and went up to take a look. My TD does not appear to have this relay box - at least not on the firewall/bulkhead. Is this item some modern upgrade found only on TFs? Thanks. Jud
J K Chapin

Jud, if you have turn signals you most probably have this relay. See http://www.ttalk.info/Directionals.htm for a bit about it. The same one is used in TFs. Yours might be on the back (in tub) side of the toolbox. Bud
Bud Krueger

Jud, If you have turn signals you may have this relay. Another location for it on the early cars that were converted is under the scuttle attached to the back of the toolbox or somewhere in this area.

If your car does not have turn signals, you have no need for this relay.

I will be corrected but I think turn signals were standard equipment late 1952 onward.

Jud,

I think Bud nailed it. Based on your late car number, you should be able to see your relay bolted to the back of the glove box under the cowl.

Hi Paul,

I suspect you had to do the same as me. The "flaps" the wires connect to are steel and mine had surface rust. They were rivetted in and couldn't be easilly removed so I cleaned them and tinned them with solder to stop them corroding again.

My old TD didn't have flashers but I fitted them. I managed to find a relay box but the workings were rusty and useless. I was able to buy new relays for a couple of pounds from Maplin and they fitted easilly under the cover. You need multi contact ones. I think I posted the circuit diagram. If you are converting a TD any suitable box will do since it is hidden under the dash.

Where I'm at now on the wiring. Have to remove the regulator and shorten the wires, their too long and look like a mess. Easy correction. Onward! PJ

Here's the OEM location of the turn signal relay as found in 'the53'. Bud

Bud Krueger

Aha! I do have turn signals. I'll go take a look under the scuttle. Thanks. Jud
J K Chapin

Yep, it's there. Right where y'all said it woud be. What does it do? I thought the flasher can provided the relay for the signals and the turn signal switch just selected which side flashed. Thanks. Jud
J K Chapin

Jud, see http://www.ttalk.info/Directionals.htm Bud
Bud Krueger

Thanks. I kinds thought that the brake light and front side light were a pretty heavy load for the small conductors in the flasher can. Jud
