MG TD TF 1500 - Electronic (solid state) voltage regulator - ??
While on the great TD safari, I'm almost sure I saw a picture of a solid state voltage regulator on one of the cars shown for sale. Is there such a thing? I found a very nice car and I'm keeping this TD on the road for a few years before restoration and because the Mrs. will be driving it a far amount of the time, side of the road tinkering won't do. I know.... if it's up to snuff the original style will provide many miles of..... 5 post regulator. |

M Andrus - How do you know that the regulator was solid state? Were you able to look under the cover of the regulator? And id so, where there two circuit boards inside? A number of years ago, a gentleman in the US was modifying stock regulators to solid state and I had him do one for me. The regulator worked fine for several years, but appears to have died recently. Unfortunately, the gentleman who made the solid state regulators passed away several years, so I have no way to have the solid state regulator checked out and/or fixed and my only choice was to purchase a new regulator which was produced off shore. It appears that it is working ok, but I am not confident that it will last as long as the original Lucas regulator did. Cheers - Dave |

The photo wasn't very clear - 1 board or 2....? I've had both an MGB and an E-Type Jag and I had to carry a spare in each one just in case I couldn't get the original working. I did have to put in the spare in the B 200 miles from home once because it drained the battery - a PITA in a motel parking lot. I'd like to avoid this again. Even if I never need it it's worth checking and considering. From Dynamic's website: To fit a 6 or 12v electronic regulator to your Lucas MCR1/2 RB108 case £95.00 To fit a 6 or 12v electronic regulator to your Lucas CJ1, CFR1, CFR2 case £149.95 Sounds a bit steep. Moss's repro is about $60.00 "cleaned and adjusted". I might just throw a spare in the go-bag and leave it at that. |

That was Bob Jeffers who used to do the conversion. I hesitated a bit too long and didn't get it done before he past away. Too bad no one has taken up the baton. Tyler |

Has anyone had any experience with Classic Dynamo % Regulator conversions? Bill TD24570 |

Check the archive for my posts, plenty of information including images on building your own. Most difficult task is sourcing some of the components however achievable if you do the heavy lifting. Happy to discuss my experiences of line if you drop me an email (graruth@bigpond.com). Graeme |

With respect, I don't understand all the problems with points-type control boxes. I've been running them in all my MGs for over 20 years. I've had two of them rebuilt in all that time, and they never prevented the car from running even when they finally did need service. If a solid state unit fails, it will fail catastrophically and leave you stranded! I suspect that cars which are not driven regularly may be the ones with issues, but that's just a hunch. Or maybe there are a lot of improperly calibrated rebuilds out there? Or poor reproductions? If it were me, I'd just send it off to Jerry Felper for a rebuild, and then not worry about it for another 20 years. |

I have a NOS 9 pin in my TD and it has held up for over 20 years. It sits for 5 months of the year and gets about 500 miles of driving in the summer. |
