MG TD TF 1500 - engine/gearbox removal

Hey all, I can't seem to raise the engine enough to for the rear mount bolt to clear the rear mount. It seems that the firewall is in the way. DO I need to remove the 4 bolts holding the mount in place? Remove the firewall? Thanks, Tom
Thomas McNamara

Do you have the rad removed?
C.R. Tyrell

You do need to remove the rear mount, including the center nut that holds the rubbers in place; I sometimes wiggle the rubbers out and that helps. The firewall does not need to come off.

Don't know where you are in the process, but you may find it helpful to remove the three bolts that hold the steering shaft to the steering box shaft, and pull the steering shaft back into the car. I remember your earlier post about removing the shifter, so I know you have done that!

Hi Tom,
I found it necessary to remove the front rubber engine mount. This allows the front of the engine to drop low enough that the rear engine mount bolt will clear the rear support bracket. I also remove the U shaped bracket that connects the engine bearing plate to the front rubber engine mount. The clearances are still tight, but it has worked for me. I am assuming the rad has been removed.

Hey all, yes the rad is out, generator is gone, starter ect. Followed the yellow book but it does not mention the tranny mount. Tom

Seemed to me that I moved the engine as far forward as I could... raised it til it met the firewall. I used an equalizer on the lift and cranked it down at the rear until it just touched the trans cross member. Then I man handled it forward til it cleared the trans cross member then it came right out.

Maybe there has been much debate on this in other posts? If so very sorry.
Have always found it easier to remove starter and all bell housing bolts, place a suitable support under the gearbox and then pull the engine only. Leaving the gearbox to be removed later at leisure, if you need it out at all.

I remove the rear trans mount after supporting the engine with a hoist. I then remove the front mount to give clearance for the sump. Some sumps have a step at the front which REALLY help with clearance issues. However, I've got it down now so it really is more of a process rather than a chore.

Hey all, finally got the engine/gearbox out. I see that there is an "inspection plate" on the tranny bell housing. Which way should the open end point? Thanks, Tom
Thomas McNamara

It actually has a direction on the plate.
