MG TD TF 1500 - Exhaust Pipe Paint

Can anyone recommend a good paint for the section of exhaust pipe from the manifold to the muffler. Mine was so dirty with baked on oil I had to clean it with the wire wheel on my bench grinder.

Hi Mort
I used a black ceramic based paint called Flameproof which is designed for exhaust system components. It was purchased through Repco, one of the auto spare parts stores here in Oz. It only becomes durable once up to temperature. I discovered by accident if you happen to get any WD40 on the pipework it acts like a paint stripper. This shouldn't be a problem however after it's cooked.

Try aerosol stove paint for BBQs. I used it on my Jag manifold. Nice matt black and coats well.

Of course it is black ( or at least I have never seen it in silver).

Cheap and easy to find.

Cheers.

For Your Consideration- I bought a 6' section of flexible stainless tubing from Autozone, very reasonable priced, and slipped it over the exhaust pipe all the way back to the muffler, so it stays shiny and knocked down the temp in the engine compartment & footwell, (but not by much). Also bought another piece and ran it from the muffler all the way back.

My wife always wanted a Duesenberg with those flexible stainless exhaust pipes poking out of the bonnet (they were a really ugly exhaust system under the bonnet), but this is as close as she'll ever get!

VHT paint is available. ( Very High Temperature ) And that is what is on the label. I think it is made by Duplicolor but I am not sure. I just freshened up my exhaust with it and it is available in Castiron colour. It is a ceramic based paint that gives a ceramic coating after a couple of heat cycles. Good for manifolds too. Its about $16 a can, but covers really well.

POR high temp works fantastic. I use it on the manifold and the down pipe. Manifold needs touching up every few years, but the down pipe has stayed very nice. Similar to when I first painted it.

Not Duplicolor.... try this link.

Calyx manifold dressing may be a good choice for your exhaust pipe. It is a waxy looking substance that you rub on with a rag or tooth brush. Buff with a rag if you want. It won't make the pipe look brand new. But paint won't make a pitted pipe look new either, and may actually bring attention to the defects.

May need to apply every couple of years. Completely reversible.

I use it on the cast iron exhaust manifold of my '54 Chevy pickup and am pleased with the look.
