MG TD TF 1500 - Fan fitting one from a MGB

It's often mentioned that fitting a multiblade fan from a MGB improves engine cooling. These fans, however, are very expensive - even grotty second hand ones. A much cheaper alternative is an eleven bladed one from am Mini. The issue is they are only 11" in diameter. Will one of these still be an improvement.

Jim,

I've had an electric 10" fan on my TF for 8 years and it has been entirely adequate to keep my engine cool even at quite high temperatures, like 40°C in the southern US.

Do the bolt holes like up?

The only time the fan would help is stop and go traffic or parading..otherwise the car moving will provide far more flow than any fan. A few guys are using a thermostatically controlled fan to move air out of the engine compartment when the car is first parked.

Jim,
As far as I know the mini fan turns in the opposite direction and won't work!

Hi Declan,
Surely if the Mini fan is driven by a belt, rather than an electric motor, (something I am not certain of) it must turn in the same direction as the engine?

Jan,

I don't know anything about the Mini fan but, there can be a difference between a "pusher" or "puller" type fan. Several brands of the old bulldozers that I used to operate had fan blades that were spring loaded so that you could actually change the angle of them from pushing to pulling based on whether it was summer or winter and what was best for the current temperature conditions. The Mini fan blade angle would need to be the same as the MG.

Hi Declan,

I owe you a drink! I have just looked at pics of a MGB fan and one from a Mini and the angle of the blades is different. I cannot fathom how it works on a MIni. The MGB ones are the same as the ones on the TF. Disapointment is a brand new Mini one is £13 and a very scruffy, second hand, MGB one is £35

Cheers

Hi Jan,
on a Mini BMC type) the fan draws air from the engine and then through the radiator rather than through the rad on to the engine like ours, so the blade angle is reversed.

Jan,
I recently got a replacement fan from Moss (434-340) for my TD.
Works and fits fine. Installed without removing the radiator or anything else.

www.lbcarco.com lists 434-340 at $59.46 for a new MGB, 7-blade fan. Pound at about $1.45, add shipping of $20 and its probably a good deal at about £55. FOB UK, (ex VAT).

I had this one on the watch list for some time ebay # 380626247373. Ford Pinto 7 blade, hole dimensions are specified in the ad. Not sure it works, though I haven´t compared the dimensions in detail. But look right to me

I had the chance to buy a 6 blade MGA fan from a jumble box, (not fitted yet), so I stopped my searches. But I have seen MGB blades as low as 18 GBP on ebay. Thed did look grubby, though, but I guess that is normal with age.

The MGA fan is basically the same as TD, only 6 blades instead of 4. All metal, so slightly on the heavy side, but nicely painted in yellow.

Jan,

I found out that a 1800cc Morris Marina has the same fan as the MGB. That may broaden your search area?
I bought a grotty one for EUR 5,-, sprayed it black and 'Bob was my uncle'.

I fitted short lengths of plastic hose to fill the holes of the fan, because the bolts are thinner on the XPAG.

The Mini fan may push the air through the radiator, into the wheel area? That would explain the different blades?

Apparently fans from the Peugeot 205 also fit. Maybe that's worth a trip to the breakers yard?
Willem van der Veer

Surely the configuration of the Mini fan is a result of the fact that it is an East/West engine.
