MG TD TF 1500 - Fast idle cable routing and footrest??

My car is at the upholsterers and now several questions have arisen during the carpet installation. It seems that I had routed the fast idle cable though one of the ite board mounting holes for the passenger footrest. So here go the ??

1) Where does the cable go through the toe board/ firewall?

2) What hardware retains the footrest to the toe board and floor?

i haven't found a picture that clearly shows this.

Thanks in Advance

Bill -

1) Choke cable:
See image of TD firewall below from Chris Couper's site. I can't give first hand info because the choke cable on my TF is routed differently than the TD because of the addition of the wiper motor on the firewall in TFs.

2) Footrest:
Read about carpet installation, including footrest, on Chris's site. It is excellent. I followed it with good results. The footrest was held to the floorboard with three small wood screws, and to the toeboard with two bolts. Chris shows two ways of installing the footrest. (I used the "optional" method.)
http://www.mg-cars.org.uk/mgtd/mgtd_carpet.htm

I inserted the two top bolts for the footrest from the engine-side of the toeboard into the passenger compartment and locked them to the toeboard with nuts. I installed the top of the footrest through the two bolts and secured with nuts. I only installed two of the three screws at the bottom. Easy to remove the footrest if necessary.

Some members of our club only attach the footrest with the two top bolts and leave out the bottom screws to make it even easier to remove. They use the space behind the footrest for storing emergency parts like a generator.

The two holes in the toeboard for the footrest are along or near the bolted seam of the toeboard and firewall. Pretty much where the unlabeled holes are in the firewall diagram. Easy to find by placing the footrest in the car. I used 1/4-20 SAE because I was in a hurry and they don't show the way that I installed them.

After installing the footrest onto the two bolts. Push it into place and install the wood screws through the holes along the bottom of the footrest.

Bill,
When you mount the passengers toe board you could use stiff nuts on the two bolts and leave it just a little loose so you can lift the toe board and have a nice little space to keep stuff you won't need often - like small spare parts. You don't need to secure the bottom to the floor boards with screws either. If you carpet it and the two bolts are not tight it will lay there just fine. It's a same to waist that space.

Thanks Lonnie and Rod for your comments. Great idea about utilizing the space. Do I have the two holes located for the footrest and they both take hardware. So then where does the fast idle cable come through the firewall/ toeboard. I have the diagram from Chris's site but there is no mention of that cable. And I haven't found a clear picture of that area where it should come through to know where exactly it goes. I don't see a hole in my toeboard now that I used it to mount the footrest. There is what looks like a notch in the firewall's leading edge, directly above the front brace/tower and above the outer mounting hole for the foot rest, but it doesn't seem to have a clean hole or it is partially occluded where the toeboard and firewall meet. It is directly above the 1" access hole cut in the tower for the outer mounting bolt related to the footrest. Sorry I can't take a pic and post it to try to describe it more clearly

Bill, The fast idle cable is a feature on the TC and not the TD....normally. So if in fact you are talking about the fast idle and not the choke/fuel enrichment cable, then there is no stock location on a TD. I suppose you would be free to route it however you saw fit.
MG LaVerne

On the TC you have 3 cables to deal with...

Starter
Choke
fast idle

You can see the arrangement here..the 3 above the open spot missing the steering shaft..

Your right Laverne I meant the enrichener cable routing

Then it runs through the opening in the firewall along with the wiring harness and the speedo cable as shown in the diagram above. Listed as the choke cable. Doesn't involve the toe board or foot rest.

You can see the cable running along with the speedo cable in this image ( number 8) on an original car. You are unlikely to get a picture of the cable coming through the opening as the horn is usually covering that spot.

Thank you Laverne for the info. Missed the detail in that picture. Hmm. Looks like I'll be buying a replacement cable. No way mine is going to be long enough.

Bill,
When you fit a new cable for the choke, (and or starter) leave it long and don't worry about the extra length. If you cut it shorted and later you want to remove or pull back the Dashboard for any reason you won't be able to.
Without first having to undo the connection on the choke, same goes for the started cable - better to leave them long.
Once the inner cable has been clamped and crushed it is a pain to get it back into the fixing points and also it can jam in the outer if pulled back too far.

Here is a picture of my choke cable and where I brought it through the firewall. I'm not saying it is concourse or correct. Just a strait in approach to the leaver and clamp point. Make the return of the choke to the "Off" position easier to archive. (Jets fully up against the adjustment nuts) Gives the least resistance. I also soldered the last 5 inches of the inner Bowden cable to make it stiff - which also really helps.

Well upon further inspection of my firewall it appears there is a hole in the top stamped rib just under the second fuel pump, above and to the left of the horn mount that is just the size of the cable sheath to pass through . Guessing that is my mystery hole. Tried to route my original cable through it but it comes up short. I'll have to order one from Moss to replace it. Any opinions regarding their cables ?

I had no issue with the one I put on the TD but I have heard of some that the knobs came off. Like a lot of the stuff it seems to be hit and miss depending on who they sourced the part from this week.
