MG TD TF 1500 - Felt in toolbox versus fixings

Some parts are fixed with hardware to the toolbox of my TF. For instance voltage regulator, flasher, ...

Are the nuts inside the toolbox hidden by the felt or not?

With other words, first install the felt and then the parts with bolts and nuts or first fit the parts on the toolbox and then glue the felt?
John van den Boorn

On a td the felt goes in last and covers over any hardware or wood blocks

Always wondered why that felt was white, of all colors. Inside a tool box???

Does anyone have a picture?

The wooden block to stabilise the jack is screwed into place, the front & rear pieces are glued with both having cutouts that go over the wood. The one piece end, bottom & end is then fitted. All fixings are covered as Bill says. Off white woolen felt of the correct thickness & density is available in Melbourne made from Australian merino wool. Cheers

Thank you Bud for the link - looks like something for an operating room of a hospital ;-).

W_Mueller

It does have that look. Main problem with it is when installing it using contact cement. It's a pain to keep it from touching other areas of the toolbox besides the one that you're trying to cover. Bud

Peter,

Who is the Melbourne supplier?

Michael

I'll email you offline Michael with the details. The felt is available by the metre so you'll have enough for two or three toolboxes. Cheers

Misplaced your contact details Michael. Can you call me?

And then moisture gets into the box, the base of the jack rusts and leaves nice stains on your white felt. :-)

Back to the original topic... can anybody with an “original” TF conform that the hardware (nuts) are covered with the felt?
John van den Boorn

John, I think Peter answered that earlier. All hardware is covered by the felt, TF or TD. Bud

Chris I have heard of people making a bag with a drawstring to house the jack. The other problem here is grease from the jack messing up the felt. This bag could be removed prior to judging so that no points are lost. Cheers

after work please show pictures

@ Bud,
Yes Peter answered but I wondered if there is a difference between a TD and a TF.

@ W-mueller,
Because the felt goes in last it will take a while before I can make a picture. A friend of my mailed me a picture from an MG-book. Don’t know which book. Maybe it helps?

John van den Boorn

Exactly the same John. If you look closely you can see the felt covered wooden block in John's pic. In the image below of an original TF set of felt the method I described above can be clearly seen. This is from a TF in Queensland. Cheers

I think the best option, if you want to keep the felt clean, is find a poly bag that fits the toolbox as well as possible, and put everything inside that. It may not look great, but it works.

I've been following this thread on and off because I thought about replacing my felt which is, as you guys discussed, very easy to stain considering it's a toolbox. I got a lot of good points on installing but I wonder why no-one as yet has suggested using a black felt instead. Do you all feel it is necessary to preserve the original color? Is there nothing on your cars that's not factory correct? Using a plastic bag to protect the inside of a toolbox reminds me of the days my family used plastic covers for the living room couch, protecting it from what it was originally intended for.

For me Mike it's ALL about originality. Anyone can stick a V8 into a T Type or paint it purple but the real challenge for me at any rate it to attempt to research, hunt for the correct parts & then present the car just as it looked when it left the factory. A tall order I know as there is much that still argued about, but that's what floats my boat. If that means off white woolen felt of the correct thickness & density, installed just as it was in the tool box, then so be it. I know I'm not alone in this. The fact the Chris Couper's site - which is devoted to originality - is so well frequented, tells me that. In a few months I plan to be driving a RHD 1951 TD reference work. I don't see myself as an owner, even though the car has been in my possession for 48 years, just as a custodian who has been extended a temporary privilege. I genuinely believe the motto for us all should be 'do no harm'. You might think I'm crazy but I see black felt in the tool box as just the start of a slippery slope. Cheers

Ahh Peter. I won’t mention some other slippery slopes you did take.
