MG TD TF 1500 - Filling TF Steering Rack
This may have been covered elsewhere, but I have a question about the TF steering rack lubrication port. I have a grease nipple on the front of the rack, about centered, about halfway down from the top. I don't have a grease gun that will pump oil. BUT, there is a nut on top of the rack, centered over the steering column. Can I remove that nut and fill the rack with oil from that opening? Or is there a gremlin that will jump out of that opening (in the form of springs, etc. that cannot be reinserted) if I remove the nut? Cheers, Frank |

Frank - You will need to remove the damper that is under that large nut, then you can pour (slowly) the gear lube in through there. You can also get a large needle type apparatus that can be slid under the one of the boots (after removing the clamping ring and force the lube in that way. Cheers - Dave |

Just out of curiosity, is there a grease gun specifically designed to administer oil to this zerk? Assuming there must be, where would I purchase one? John |

Could you just take the zerk out and use a narrow funnel ? Dave |

Remove the fitting, use an 18 inch long piece of neoprene tubing that will fit inside the hole in the rack, and over the nozzle of the GEAR OIL plastic bottle,,, This allows you to squeeze the GEAR OIL into the rack,, SPW |

See http://www.ttalk.info/RackOil.htm for a bit more on the topic. It also contains a link to how-to-do-it article from the OMGTR about how to make such an oiler. It's http://www.omgtr.ca/technical/highpressureoiler/highpressureoiler.htm . Bud |
