MG TD TF 1500 - Filling the steering rack
Replaced my steering rack boots, been a while since I have done that. First observation: Good grief, could they make the clamps and screws any smaller and still have them fit? Nothing like the ones I put on years ago ...1/16" longer on the screws sure would have been nice! I am sure there were some nice threads with some tricks on re-filling the rack ...darned if I can find them in the archives. Anybody know where they are? Link or re-activate? Thanks, David |

I use a grease gum with a flexible hose loaded with 90 w. gear-oil. Have a tightly compacted rag in the barrel to keep the oil from coming out the bottom of the gun. |

Hope you didn't buy the boots from the major vendors. I wound up getting some from NAPA that I think will last quite a bit longer.. As for filling...You can get a long hypodermic needle from your farm/livestock vendor...or maybe your corner drug dealer :-)...and leave the boot clamps loose enough to slide the needle in and inject the oil or.. I made up a goofy fitting out of some copper tubing and clamped it up to a plastic cheap gear oil bottle pump and pumped it into the fitting on the rack after I removed the zerk fitting. |

Do you have the part number from NAPA? I just inspected the boots of a car I replaced the boots on a few years ago, and they fell apart in my hands. David |

I use a 60 cc syringe from the pharmacy, so called catheter tipped. Unscrew the nipple, inject oil. Really easy. regards, Jan |

Boots from the major vendor...confidence is not very high! Last ones were on there for 15 years....I give these 2 at the most! Unscrew the zerk and 60 cc syringe w/ 90w sounds like the easiest way. I seem to recall seeing all kinds of elaborate devices on a thread somewhere....but couldn't find it. |

I have found that a piece of neoprene tubing can fit over the 90w plastic nipple and into the hole of the rack after the nipple is unscrewed,, no need to purchase any other syringe or gun,,,, Are the NAPPA boots actually the ones for an MGB?? More bellows and a bit longer?? SPW |

After the boots are replaced, unscrew the nut that holds the damper in place and pour 90w in. Then replace the damper and nut, keeping all the shims in order. Far easier than fiddling with a hypodermic. |

Thanks Lew ...he said with a resounding ...duh! Why do I try & overcomplicate things? |
