MG TD TF 1500 - Firewall Brace Hole?

Chris Cooper brought up a question relating to these holes in the firewall brace. It looks like it is something on most, if not all TD's.

Does yours have them? and what would they have been for?

I assume that as the hole catches the edge of the inside steel plate, and it is the same across TD's, it is something done by a machine. What the holes are for, I don't know.

good morning Bruce,
I believe it's for the speedometer cable.

It does not appear the larger of the two holes does not go all the way through. Doesn't on my car. If it did, maybe for the tach cable but on my car this cable goes through on the far left end of the battery box.

Bruce,

I suspect the larger hole is for one of the bolts which holds the passenger foot rest panel to the 'firewall panel'. Certainly used for TFs in this way,

The Factory probably drilled these holes for both Right Hand and Left Hand Drive cars. Of course, the hole in your LHD TDs case, would not be used?

Bruce,

Just to clarify, the Right hand side of your car would have a bolt gathering up the passenger foot rest ?

That hole I understand, It is for the footrest, it is the odd one above it that I was wondering about Seems strange to drill a hole that cuts through the edge like that.

My ‘50 RHD has these holes on both sides, but they are not in use.

I can only guess but I imagine it was used for a dowel in a jig for welding the pieces together. The how in the process I haven't a clue.

I like LaVerne's speculation. :-)

My 53 TD has the same holes on both sides. Clearly drilled from the inside with no support behind the drilling because it bent the outside flange slightly. There is also "flash" on the outside edge of the hole. It's almost as if it was "stamped" through because of the ring of metal pressed through. Above my pay grade, just observations.
