MG TD TF 1500 - Firewall Holes
My wife and I drove a TD 47 years ago. While I have been restoring cars (mostly early Fords)all that time, it was just recently that we bought a 52 and a 53 in need of restoration. I am anxious to start these new projects. I have noticed that in both cases there are various holes in the firewalls that most likely shouldn't be there. Is there any way to find out which ones belong there, before I start welding. Thanks in advance. Neil |

In the firewall section of my website there is a diagram of the firewall and the holes. www.dbraun99.com Dave |

In case you have trouble finding it on Dave's site here is a copy showing the locations. Cheers, Roy ![]() |

Neil-- I followed the diagram shown when I rebuilt my TF. I would consider changing the routing of the 'temperature gauge tube' as it is very close to the coil contacts. In my case the temperature tube touched the coil which in turn burned a hole in the tube. After having the tube repaired I changed the routing of it using the same hole as the tach cable in the battery box. Larry |

Roy's digram is for a TD, not a TF. There's a diffrence. Bud |

Here's the source if anyone cares. I know because I changed it a bit on the right hand side. http://www.mg-cars.org.uk/mgtd/mgtd_firewall.htm I am still looking for the source for the TF. I gave the visio drawing to someone and I cannot remember who. They modified it for the TF and were supposed to give it back to me but ... |

Just one comment Chris- Holes for the firewall should be spelled "holes" not "wholes" |

Roy: Thanks for the catch. It reminds me of an old story (not that it applies here). I once had a math professor that told our class that many of the answers in the back of math books were purposefully wrong. The reason was for copyright proof. People would steal problems from books to put in their own publications. Often times they would take the answers too and that was a way of proving they just copied the lot versus creating the problem themselves. |

Chris, thanks for citing your involvement in that diagram. I stuck it in my website because it was very handy for getting the firewall correct. It was never my intention to take credit for it. I think I got it years ago when someone shared it here. I will either remove the one I have, or remove it and replace it with your diagram with your attribution. Let me know which you prefer. Warmly, Dave |

Perhaps one should note which holes are there only on earlier or later cars, such as the fuse block holes (late only), etc. Were there ever heater hose holes in the firewall? Most cars I see have them, but varying enough in position and quality that I suspect they are all later additions. Tom Lange MGT Repair |

Dave: All the stuff on the internet moves on its own. I am as guilty as the next. I try when possible to provide a link back to the source but then of course links often disappear. I would really like to find out who I gave the TF plan to so I can post it with credit at least. I searched my email but cannot find a record for it. It probably occured during one of those 'special' computer events we wall have when they decide to throw away things for unknown reasons :-) |
