MG TD TF 1500 - Fitting the oil pressure gauge line TF

Just setting up the new gauge line on our TF, and wondering how you pass the fitting through the hole in the scuttle? It is clearly larger than the hole (above the tacho cable in the battery box area). Are they meant to be desoldered in situ, or do I have the wrong location, or do I need to enlarge the hole?

John-- I hope the photo gets through as this is the first time I have done this under the changed system. Anyway, I originally routed the oil line according to sketches of the scuttle, i.e. what goes in each hole. I do not remember what the sketches showed regarding the routing of the oil line but I found that the line rubbed against the fuse block and burned a hole in the line. I rerouted the line just as I believe you are describing, i.e. through the same hole as the tach cable. I do remember having to removed the tack cable in order to fit the oil line through and then reinstalled the tack cable. There was no problem fitting the oil line through the hole as the hole was definitely big enough.

If what I wrote is not clear please let me know and I can try again. I can also send whatever pictures you might need if it will help.

John-- After looking at your picture (which I missed) I now realize that you have two holes. I only have the one hole, at least as best I can remember. I wonder if you could move the tack cable to the smaller hole and use what looks to be a slightly larger hole for the oil line.

John,

From memory, there should be no problem getting the oil line fitting through the hole in the battery box.

However,if firstly the battery box has been replaced
then the hole may have been slightly changed in diameter.

Secondly,if the oil line is a replacement repro., then the brass coupling may be too large.

Just BTW, many of the repro oil lines for TFs are too long. As you probably know, there is a small diameter leather washer where the coupling meets the oil gauge itself.

I use a thin rubber sleeve around the oil line as it enters the battery box area to where it meets the correct hole in the battery box. Then I place a split rubber grommet in the hole to again protect against any possibility of rub.

Could it be that the nut on the other end is smaller and the oil line might come through from inside---just a thought-?

After due consideration I think we have come up with a more elegant solution. We are running new 3/16 line and reusing the original fittings, and the hole in the battery box would need to be enlarged a fair bit to accomodate the fitting. This is non destructive and reversible if a future owner wanted concourse points. We didn’t have the original bracket that attaches to the coupling either, so that had to be fabricated regardless. I will sheath the oil line where it might rub on the temp line too.

Thanks for your input as always!

Willy, we were looking at the smaller fitting.

All good John thanks, your fix looks like it'll work fine--
