MG TD TF 1500 - Fitting the petrol tank

In the middle of fitting the petrol tank to the car. I have used LaVerns trick of longer bolts to pull it close to the body of the car. My concern is though that it's very tight already have a bit of a distance to go.
Not sure if the chrome brackets will reach the back of the car or with somthing give!
Possibly the back rail the chrome brackets attach to or the top of the metal strap that inserts into the chrome brackets.
I had my tub rebuilt by Hudson and there are positions for the 2 metal brackets the rubbers and tank lean against. Possibly if I lowered these it might help. The rubbers also seam quite thick. Maybe thinner rubbers would also help.
There is no play in the lower connecting bolts to the spare wheel bracket.
Not sure what to do and would appreciate any suggestions.
Thanks Darryl

Darryl,
You could try thinner rubbers eg an old bicycle tube and see if that makes any difference.

Thanks Declan I have some thinner rubber I was going to cut down. Going to have to have a cup of coffee as it's taken me 2 hrs single handedly to get this far without scratching anything. Back to square 1 with a bit more knowledge.
Thanks again..

Aren't the straps screwed up tight at the top and then tensioned by the long studs at the bottom?

J Targosz

That doesn't work for me Jan as I seam to have so little if any spare strap to play with.

Sorted...a combination of thinner rubbers and moving the bracket down slightly fixed the problem.

Different issue now. My new wire wheels are too wide to fit on the spare wheel carrier as it lies against the tank. Anyone know of a solution. ...

I don't have wires, but can't you put a spacer between the wheel (hub) and the carrier??

What size are the tires?
L E D LaVerne

Hi LaVerne The tyre size is 165VR15 and they are resting on the tank. Don't think this is normal.
Is it possible to get spacers?
Thanks Darryl

Darryl,

On TFs re the spare tyre fit to fuel tank, many spare wheel/tyre brackets have been compromised through past accidents in the rear
end. This can then bend the bracket forward and/or change the angle
slightly of the rear portions of the chassis frame itself ! A horrible thought.

As a general guide, the gap between the tyre wall and the fuel tank's rear panel is around 1cm to 2 cms . However, like everything with T types, there is some variation from car to car with different tyre sizes together with other factors.

If desperate,it is possible using heat (oxy acetylene) to bend the tubing of the spare tyre bracket back slightly and evenly to increase the gap required. If the tyre is against the fuel tank panel, over time it will rub the paint off( usually the fuel tank straps are the first 'victims').

A novel solution might be the rubber doughnut gasket for a toilet tank. It should fit into the hub of the wire and give some spacing while also being able to be compressed.

Also, not sure if the TF is the same as the TD, but as I remember the bracket that the threaded end of the tank strap goes into is adjustable. Think when I put my tank on, I loosened the pinch bolt and attached the strap to the loose bracket. This allowed more adjustment.

I have 165's on my car and there is plenty of room?

L E D LaVerne

Hi LaVerne My car from the same angle. Never been rear ended but amazing the difference not only with the wheel sitting on the tank but the gap between the rear wing and the rear splash pan. I have had to put a 1cm thick rubber between the chassis mount and the rear wing just to achieve the very thin gap I have and avoid rubbing. Not ideal.

Thanks Bruce think I may even have one of those.
