MG TD TF 1500 - Fitting the TF center hood strip

Each end of the center hood strip has an inner and outer (chromed) bracket(photo). Is the chrome bracket on top of center strip, and inner bracket under center strip? Is a 1-in. wood screw sufficient for the rear attachment?

My cowl rubber strip was cut/removed under the rear bracket, except for the rolled lip of the strip(it is continuous). What size tacks to attach the rubber strip (I have No.3 x 3/8", too big? too short?)

thanks,
Tyler

Tyler,
My TD has the same cut bonnet rubber as you - I think that this is correct.
I do not have the inner support fitted (as you can see) but have just received mine from LBCC - which I will be mounting.
It does go underneath the center rod and the Chrome Outer is then mounted on top.
I have 1" countersunk wood screws into the Tub wood (Chrome slotted) I have heard on this forum that some folks have fitted brass inserts into which a set screw can mount for a stronger fixing. So far my screws have held OK
At the front there is a short 1/2 x 3/16th Inch countersunk machine screw with the nut mounting underneath the rad suround fabric tape at the top to hold the front together. Locate the support bit same as rear.

Tyler, the left hand bracket is the correct inner one, not sure about the others. Is the back of your chrome brackets closed? It should be, and should have just a single countersunk screw hole, not the oval slots as in your picture. Make sure whatever screw head you use is at or below the bracket surface, or it will bend up and help crack the metal at the corner. George

I'm rapidly turning into a "DPO" (Dumb Present Owner). Probably doing some things not by the Abingdon book.

I used nyloc type lock nuts on the machine screws to attach the front clip on my TF. I used the manditory DPO toothpicks to fill the oversize holes for the rear clip. SAE fasteners on both clips.

Not correct for the concourse police I attached my cowl strip with 10mm 16# stainless pan head self tappers, using tacks are just another source of rust and timber deterioration.

Attaching the centre strip end stops is still a mystery to me, I am not happy with the way I fitted them despite having purchased all new items.

If someone has some images depicting how they were fitted in the factory it would be appreciated.

For TF's stop short of the side panel instructions and invent your own technique for adjusting the latches.

Chris,
thanks for the reference. I'll go get the correct wire nails tomorrow.

Is there a tip for coaxing the rubber cowl strip around the bend without having it pucker?

Okay, I have all the correct brackets, but what are those brackets for that are in the middle of the photo? They came with the TF.
thanks, Tyler

If you go to this link all will become clear;

Big plus using this catalog is that schematics are in color, you will have to scroll to the relevant page. Item 22 on page 81 is the part in question.

Graeme,
Very nice catalog. I should of had this 3 years ago for a reference. But, Item 22 on page 81 is the two brackets on the left side of my photo (above). The two middle brackets are still a mystery to me. I bought my car with boxes of disassembled parts. I've found out since then that a handful of those parts have nothing to do with the TF.

thanks,

CT. You will need a partner. With the current Moss et al hood strips, brute force is required. One person will have to push, shove and bend the rubber while the other quickly tacks the nails in. Make sure you keep it taught too. Work from the top down obviously.
