MG TD TF 1500 - Flaring Muffler Pipes

Posted a query on a recent thread on this question & went looking in the archive to add the following couple of pics, but couldn't find the thread. Borrowed the tool in the pic from my local mechanic & it works really well. The internal ID should now accept both the manifold & tail pipes. The Lukey muffler circa 1969 is wrapped to protect the black Flameproof ceramic paint as it is susceptible to damage until it bakes on. It is also able to be dissolved by WD 40.

Does it make any difference as to which way the muffler is installed? By that I mean does it have a front & a rear? A couple of muffler guys I've spoken to here say that with a straight through muffler it shouldn't make any difference. I note that the pipes that I've just flared at each end of the muffler are different lengths. This PC & the car are 8 klms apart so I'd like to know the answers before I attempt installation. Obviously the relative positions of the front & rear pipes should give me some idea of orientation. Any advice gratefully received. Cheers

Doubt you have a "directional Muffler", if you do there will be an arrow indicating the direction of flow. Only other issue to look out for is if the pipe connections are offset to facilitate alignment to the engine and tail pipes.

Hope you dont get done for a noisy exhaust, Lukeys were built for the rev heads.

Finally got on to Lukey in QLD & was advised that the muffler is not directional. They no longer make them for T Types. He suggested though that the end with the slightly longer pipe should go to the front. I don't have a problem with a noisy exhaust, in fact I'm quite looking forward to it! Cheers

Trial fitted the exhaust system today. One annoying thing was that the holes predrilled in the rubber mounted exhaust hangers don't match the holes in the two brackets on the chassis. These came from Sportsparts in Sydney but I don't know who supplied Bruce. He tells me they came from a supplier in the States. I was pleased to note that they DIDN't come from Moss! On the hangers the two holes are offset at different heights & they are much further apart. Not even close to lining up with the chassis brackets. Just discovered from Bruce that they are made for MG A's & MG B's. Just a heads up on the difference between the A & TD hangers. The later hanger wont fit without some serious modification.

I also have concerns about the tail pipe clearance below the rear axle housing. I have about 1/2". I've tested this with the car on stands under the rear springs & also with the wheels on the deck thinking that there may have been a difference. Same result. So I'll have to weld up the hanger holes & re drill them. Also thinking of welding a bit of sheet steel to the top of the hangers so I can lower the pipe a little to gain better clearance under the rear axle. Cheers

My TF which came from Australia has a Lukey, loudness is in the ear of the beholder, I think it purrs like a kitten, my wife not so much a fan, but she rides in it.

Exhaust hangers prior to welding. Shows offset holes on the MGA hangers & my extended plate. The plates are from a stainless steel door hinge. I may have to elongate these holes slightly to align with the chassis bracket. This will now give me acceptable clearance below the rear axle which will now bottom out in the check straps before it hits the exhaust pipe. Cheers

Welding heat loosened the glue that secures the rubber to the hanger, so re-secured the front & rear hanger plates that sandwich the rubber pad with a couple of bolts. BSF of course. :-) Also had to ovalise the 'hinge' holes in the extended hanger plate to align with the chassis bracket as suspected. Nothing it seems is ever straightforward.. Cheers

Happy to report exhaust system now fully installed. One step closer. Cheers
