MG TD TF 1500 - float level adjustment

I am having difficulty getting the float levels in my carbs set to the proper level according to Dave B's instructions, which I had no problem following for my MGB. The problem I am having is the float level is always way too low although I have the forks set to allow the float to go as high as it can without being stopped by the spring loaded pin on the float chamber lid. The floats are the original brass floats and have been tested for leaks, the float needle and seat are new as well. It seems no matter what I do the level is always way low. I know I am missing something simple but cannot for the life of me figure out what it is. I even tried having another OSH to see if that would help, but alas, no joy. Any ideas?

Don, I faced the same problem and I still haven't got to the bottom of it.

For my previous thread on this please see:

I am experiencing the exact same problem - I wonder if Dave could review those excellent instructions and see if there is a measurement mentioned incorrectly - I like the way he is approaching the adjustment - much more accurate - but I must be doing something incorrectly as well.

Is there a common denominator with these carbs, new spring loaded needles and new seats?

Dig out the old needles & seats and try again, even just try on one carb to investigate.

Has anyone called Joe Curto on this?

Joe Curto does not use these float level settings.

Follow up:

I measured the height of the float pin (spring loaded one in the lid which allows you to depress the float) from the lid base, then adjusted the forks to be just above this so they wouldn't catch before shutting off the float needle valve. The result was very close to the 3/8" stated in the WSM. I then reinstalled the float lids, filled the bowls, and measured the depth of the fuel below the bridge. One was .275 and the other was .285 so I left them alone and proceeded to balance the carbs. I haven't driven yet so I can't speak to whether the float level is too low or not but I will report back once I have had a chance to get out on the road.
