MG TD TF 1500 - Floor Board Thickness
How thick should my floor boards be? Will exterior grade WBP (water and boil proof) plywood be suitable. Many thanks Jan T |

Marine ply for me. Archives are full of good advice on this. |

I used regular ply from home depot then I soaked it in varnish cut 50% with thinners so it really got into the wood. Put a lot of coats on it and it's very very solid! |

Will check mine out this morning Jan. Your ply sounds fine. From memory about 9mm. The rear floor is thicker. I used a water based bathroom waterproofing membrane on both sides. Emmerproof, then painted them semigloss black enamel. Originally matt black I believe. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

No matter what finish you put on wood..wood moves at a different rate than it's coating. Our cars are so pampered the floorboards will long outlast us..even if put in raw. The key is always plan that they will be wet and assemble so air can circulate and promptly dry them out. All plywood now uses waterproof glue marine and all others. Regards, Tom |

I stained mine with Minwax Ebony black wood stain, followed up with several coats of saten polyurethane. Don't forget NOT to seal the floorboards to the bottom of the car, water will get in, and need to get out. Gravity is your friend. David |

I used 9mm phenolic coated plywood and sealed the edges. Phenolic resin coated plywood is commonly used for trucks, trailers, horseboxes, stages etc and is highly durable and is also available in black. Regards Declan |

Jan, The TF plywood floorboards were originally 3/8ths inch in thickness. The rear sidescreen compartment floorboards were 1/2in. Painting and sealing of new floorboards will help preserve them for the next 60 years or so! With TFs in particular, although one may feel it is desirable to use a thicker section wood,at 6' 1" I want to sit as low as possible in the car so I use the original thickness only. Cheers Rob Grantham TF3719("Aramis"),TF9177("Athos"). |
