MG TD TF 1500 - Ford 5 speed installed

With the new kit from Hi Gear we installed the Ford type 9 5-speed gearbox. A really good kit and to be recommended. It transforms the TD completely. With my speedo corrector installed the speedo is accurate within 0.5 MPH at 50MPH compared with a GPS. It is more accurate than my Mercedes!

Just driven mine in and out of the garage (only a few yards) for the first time. The reconditioned T9 box is incredibly stiff and needs a lot of effort to get into gear, especially reverse. Adjusted clutch obviously. Don't know if they are all like this. Hope it will loosen up quickly.

Dave,
Mine was a used box and the gear change is effortless.
Hope it free's up.

Looks good ! This is the one where you cut the cross member, right ?

Will you still do the axle conversion then ?

Dave, try using Motorcraft Trans Fluid instead of regular oil in your gearbox. I'd *never* recommend it for an older LBC, but for more modern gearboxes like yours it's perfect. I used it in my Miata and it absolutely TRANSFORMED that transmission... MUCH smoother, easier shifting, quieter - basically like a rebuild in a can. Seriously. It's remarkable the difference it makes. Check Miata forums and you'll see what I mean.

Yeah, it's horribly expensive, but it's definitely worth it for a modern gearbox and newer gearboxes won't leak it out so you'll be good to go for many years on one fill. You can get it at your local Ford dealer or shop around... Amazon also sells it...

Have just made a conversion to T9, that do not require relocation of engine or interfering with the crossbeam. I am also in the process of converting another type of gear box to the same standard. It will be ready by next week I hope. This one was not an easy task, but it looks very promising. Compared to a T9 it is a rather modern gear box with even rear sync.

One of them will be up for sale in a near future. The latest MG Bulletin here (unfortunately only in Swedish) had a long article on this together with a supercharger conversion I made recently.
