MG TD TF 1500 - Front Coil Springs

I thought I'd do another thread instead of activating the old one. How much difference is there between an MGB front coil and a TF coil. I surly think my right spring is not a TF spring. It's .008 thicker than the left spring and the car sets a little bit higher on that side. Could someone have put an MGB coil in there in the past? The right and left coils are the same height, but the left coils are slightly thicker. PJ

They are slightly different. The TF spring (on the right)has a narrower inside diameter for starters. The upper mounting cup is fairly snug. With a B spring not so much. The cup from a B will not fit inside of a TF spring.

Sorry...I didn;t measure anything when I had it apart. The TF cup is on the right.

MG LaVerne

Not much to work with but the TF spring is on the left.

Had the same problem . When I pulled out both springs had approximately .5 inches difference in height. Did not know which was right so ended up ordering a set which is the only thing to do.

I've posted this a picture rather than text knowing what text BBSs do with original tables. It gives the dimensions of most MG front springs.

LaVerne, Thank you for that info and pics. CJ, I'll probably do as you did and buy a new set.
David, I really appreciate you posting those specs. They tell me a lot and this morning I'm going to take some more measurements using your chart as a reference. Thank you, PJ

I found what the problem was. When I installed the springs, I didn't get the right spring seated correctly in the top, it was caught on one side of the spigot centering cup. When I jacked the front up, looking up through the bottom hole, It was plain as the nose on your face that it was hung up on one side. A narrow flat bar on the outside of the coil, a quick jerk and the spring popped in place. Quite a relief to be sure. Now the car sets perfectly level! PJ
