MG TD TF 1500 - Front Fender Bumper Bracket Hole
I noticed on Tom Norbys front fenders, the hole for the bumper bolts are oversized, I assume to allow the fender to float. Mine are the size of the bolt and the spacer compresses the fender to the chassis. I like the look of Toms arrangement better than mine, but which is correct. PJ Tom, hope you don't mind, but I posted your photo to give a nice example. Incidentally, if the rest looks like the front, the car must be beautiful! ![]() |

No Paul, they are not oversized. Not sure what you see here. The bumper spacers are in place on the bolts. They are painted grey. That might be what you see. But my holes are same size as the bolts, like yours. Tom '54 TF |

What I'm trying to say Tom and I didn't explain myself clearly, sorry, but, do the fenders lay against the dumb iron and does the spacer lay against the fender. If so, are the holes recessed, as the spacer seems to go deeper than the fender in the photo. You wouldn't have a close up shot of that area would you. PJ |
Paul S Jennings |
Paul Yes, there is an indent on each side, which the spacer fits nicely into. On the back are welded reinforcers, probably 3 or 4 in in diameter. These do lay against the dumbirons. I can try to get you a close up if you want. I believe this is normal setup for TF front fenders. Mine are originals. Tom |

Paul, The shorter, smaller diameter front spacers were originally steel on TFs.They were actually painted black. Of course, the rear spacers were made of aluminium and quite a bit longer.I believe they also were painted black although years of road filth, stones etc stripped the paint off very early in the life of the car. Very strange, my fenders are flush, not indented. I have no idea why someone would change them. could it be my fenders were replacements at some time in the cars life and they were made that way? Baffling to me! PJ |
Paul S Jennings |
Yes Rob. The back ones were black too. |
Christopher Couper |
Paul, If your front fenders were involved in a front end collision at some point, it is possible for someone unfamiliar with the original contours of the fender to eliminate the indents when they repaired the fenders-don't ask me how I know this..... JKB |

No indents on my wings, just a little angled area to sit flush against the dumbirons. Matthew. |

In reading the posts it seems that the spacers are different front and back. Anyone by chance have the dimensions, diameter and length for each?? bob |

M Magilton, Victoria, Australia No indents on my wings, just a little angled area to sit flush against the dumbirons. That makes me feel better, as that is how mine are. PJ |
Paul S Jennings |
Matthew, I thought that was what we were referring to as indents! JKB |

Interesting discussion. Here is a close up of the area for the bumper bolt. The indents are exactly symmetrical and very neat, so if custom, well done. There is a round "stiffener" welded on the backside. Matthew, are you saying your stone cold original TF is not built like this?? (note, that is road dust on my new paint) Tom ![]() |
T Norby |
Here is my "indent" with stiffener from inside of fender- As far as I know it has never been altered. JB ![]() |

JB Great photo. Mine are exactly the same. I too believe my front fenders have not been altered at that area. I'll be interested to hear what Matthew has to say later today. I trust his will look like this also. Tom |
T Norby |
Crazy, but my fenders have those stiffeners inside, but the outside front of the fender where there should be an indent is flat. Only thing I can figure is their filled in for some reason. The fenders are only on to test fit the new side panels for the third time and when they come back off, I can get a better idea of what's going on. I can say it wouldn't surprise me one bit their filled in, considering some of the asinine work that has been done on this car in the past by idiots! PJ |
Paul S Jennings |
This is possibly terminology confusion. Mine are as much protruding as indented. Could also be a slight photographic illusion in post #1. Anyhow here are mine, never pranged (ignore the washers). Matthew. ![]() |
