MG TD TF 1500 - Front Indicators/Sidelirghts

Thanks to some good advice from posters on this forum i purchased LED replacement globes from Classic Car LEDS for my TF.

The replacements set a few challenges as their overall length is 40mm. To facilitate fitment I had to relocate the bulb holder socket pillars as far aft as was feasibility possible by cutting the right angle bracket and relocating the rivets.

The learning curve was enhanced by finding that the relay box contacts have to be scrupulously clean as the LEDS draw minimal current unlike the original incandescent bulbs.

Outcome was a great result, I now have amber blinker lights and both these and the sidelights glow with higher intensity.

Classic Car LEDS are developing a shorter version of the LEDS that will fit in the sidelight enclosure that wont require it to be modified.

Evan can you share any pics.

Did you change the flasher? Do the signals flash at the same rate as before the LEDs?

Thanks,

No effect to the indicator blink rate.

For those considering this safety improvement for our cars.

I know that the TF tail/brake lights are 1157 what is the part number for front side/flasher lights?

Thanks.

I note that my front side lights are double filaments staggered pin bulbs (1175) and holders. Similar to the Brake light bulb and therefore give a white bright flasher to the front. I could only find parallel pin white and amber LED's on Abingdon Spares.
Does someone make a staggered pin white and amber LED Positive earth lamp for the front?

On my TF with flashers the front turn/signal are parallel pins.

Tail/brake are staggered 1157 style.

There are "dual color switchback" LEDs available that are common use on today's cars in the US. They come in 1157 (staggered) or 1156 (symmetrical) versions. The good thing is they don' t need no relay to work. They switch off the white when the indicator is on and then flash amber only. White comes back when the indicator is off. All built in.
I had a "corn" version first with many single LEDs, later replaced them with a lensed version that is more effizient in the torpedo shell.
Both fit into the torpedo with a bit of patience.
I use the bright white as DRL as well as for sidelight at night.
A dimmer for night use is waiting to be installed.

Stafford Vehicle Components in Staffordshire , England provides an L1130 torpedo light conversion kit. http://www.s-v-c.co.uk/product/1130-conversion-kit/ This kit provides an amber turn signal light and a white side light that fits within the housing of our front Lucas torpedo lights. I have just discovered these and have not yet ordered, but am considering them unless someone provides information that would suggest otherwise. Would appreciate everyone's thoughts.

I am using the SVC front sidelights. They work well, but if there is a drawback it is that both bulbs are capless. I wanted to change to leds and found a capless white led (5W) that fitted and gives additional brightness. The amber 21W capless tungsten bulb would be more difficult to replace with an led, though arguably its less necessary to do so.

I have uncovered a design fault in the side light/indicator LEDs I purchased.

Insertion of the LEDs into the lamp sockets can result in the bayonet fitting rotating and the solder joints for the internal protection diodes being compromised. The manufacturer uses a form of silicon to bond the metal bayonet fitting to the LED module, twisting action inserting or removing the globe can break that adhesion bond.

After repair I bonded the two components together using "Supa Glue", appears to be a permanent fix.
