MG TD TF 1500 - Front seal
I installed a one piece front seal in the timing chain cover. Consequently I can't get my sump holes to line up. The sump needs to move rearward about 1/16" however the seal is interfering. The seal in the chain cover is as rearward as it will go without mods to either the cover or the edge of the seal (pic). The seal is 1/4" thick. It's a seal from BPN. Will the Volvo or Moss seal seat better to allow me to fit the sump? ![]() |

Yes, the Volvo seal will work |

All I can report is that the Moss seal on my engine fits perfectly. |

Mine too although not a Moss, as far as width is concerned I can't remember the actual size of mine but it was the same dimension's as the National 1172 Regards George |

Gates pn ks 13945.national # 1172, fel pro tcs45725. It has a double lip seal, not a single lip seal. |

Mark, what's the make and model # of your seal? Bud |
Bud Krueger |
It's made by NAK. I just ordered a fel-pro seal. From appearances the seals all look to have the same general thickness and shape so I'm not certain it will help my situation. I should know by the end of the week. Thanks for the help. |

Mark, the National 1172 seal is 7 mm thick, i.e., just over .25". Bud |

I dry fit everything again only to find out that it's not the seal interfering with my timing cover/oil pan fit. The cover and pan simply don't align. The groove for the seal in the timing cover sits nearly 1/8" forward of the groove in the pan. So it seems my choices are limited to 1. Use the rope seal 2. Remove the rear lip in the timing cover. 3. Machine the timing cover surface that mates to the bearer plate (not a whole lot of material there). I'm open to suggestions! Thanks |

Your timing cover or pan may have been replaced at one point. Perhaps try another timing cover and see if it lines up better. I've never noticed any variation in the threaded hole positions, but you never know. |

Thanks Steve. All the bolt holes line up fine. The problem is that the timing cover recess for the seal doesn't line up with the oil pan recess. I'm not sure how to proceed but I think the old rope seal s my only option |

After 3 failed attempts at fitting a leak free modern front seal, I have gone back to the rope. You may want to fit the alternate larger slinger disk that Abingdon spares has, it was fitted to some of the later X-series engines. George |
