MG TD TF 1500 - Front Suspension Rubber Seals

I made a comment on what period of life owners are experiencing with these components in another post which was not noticed.

Inquiring what others are experiencing I have had to replace all mine after only 12 months of road use. The PO doing the restoration had obviously replaced them some unknown time prior to me purchasing the TF.

Has anyone experienced moly based grease causing them to perish prematurely?

Very possible. The current rubber is crap. Replaced two sets if rubber bushings in my MGB over a 5 year period. Went with superflex poly bushings. Also have to replace the wing vent rubbers about every 3 years. Nothing else out there for these.

G,
I agree with Bruce, the material that is being used is garbage, and it just diesn't last! Most noticable are the boots for the stearing rack,, they self destruct in just a few years,,, The rubber seals on the tie rod ends don't last either,,,

Try Abingdon Spares. They seem to have better rubber parts than Moss.

I just installed an anti-sway bar which required dropping the springs, etc. The rubber seals were in bad shape after about 3 years. They were the Moss kit.

When I get around to the front end I'll be getting in touch with Bobbie from Abingdon Spares. Thanks for the heads up. Yet another one for the dud parts list! Cheers

I took a couple of years break in my restoration of my TF when my daughter was born and when I came back to it. All the seals had perished and some were sitting on the floor. Moss replaced FOC but this is now the 3rd time to replace them during the restoration. Gives you some idea how long my restoration is taking. For me the problem isn't the cost of the seals it's the amount of work replacing them. If any one knows of an upgrade please let me know Darryl

One year is all I get from these rubber parts now too. I don't think AS is any better.

I have some swivel pin seals that are marked with "ACG 4030 LIFETIME" stamped into them. They have been on the car since at least 2007 and look perfect. However one rack boot about 2 years old is already failing. There is a bunch somewhere in the archive also, no clue where however. George

This issue is a real PITA as Darryl indicated, it is no small task to replace these items and involves stressing your wheel bearings every time you do it.

I wonder if there is sufficient demand to consider having these items molded in a different material. Maybe one of the suspension bush manufacturers might take on the task. The 4WD market have certainly been swamped with alternatives to original components.
